Maritime festival and heritage in Pont-Aven
The Fête de la Belle Angèle is a free maritime festival organized every August in Pont-Aven by the eponymous association, founded in 1991. It brings together about thirty old sailing ships classified as maritime heritage, sea shanty concerts on two stages, and a pyrotechnic show. The profits from food and drink sales (crêpes, mussels, cider) fund the preservation of Breton naval heritage, particularly the Minahouet II.
Every summer, the port of Pont-Aven, the famous city of Impressionist painters in Finistère, hosts the Fête de la Belle Angèle, a major maritime event that celebrates Breton naval tradition and the heritage of old sailing ships. Organized by the eponymous association since 1991, this free festival has become a must-attend event for maritime heritage enthusiasts and lovers of Breton conviviality.
The heart of the event is the gathering of about thirty traditional boats in the port of Pont-Aven. Among these exceptional vessels are old cutters, chassemarées, langoustiers, and other working sailboats classified as maritime heritage, some of which are listed as Monuments Historiques. The crews welcome visitors on board, share their stories and know-how, reviving centuries-old maritime traditions.
The Fête de la Belle Angèle is not just a boat show: it's a true popular festival. Two concert stages liven up the port throughout the day with sea shanties, Celtic music, and world music. Marine bands and choirs perform one after another in a festive and warm atmosphere. The highlight of the show is the fireworks display at nightfall, a pyrotechnic sound and light show that illuminates the port and the boats, offering a grand finale to this day of celebration.
The association La Belle Angèle, recognized as being of public utility, is the driving force behind this event. Founded in 1991, it is dedicated to the preservation of Breton maritime heritage, particularly the maintenance and sailing of the Minahouet II, a traditional cutter. All profits generated from the sale of food and drinks during the festival are donated to this heritage mission, making every crêpe enjoyed and every glass of cider drunk a contribution to the preservation of naval heritage.
Food and drink are a cornerstone of the festival, with stands offering crêpes, mussels and fries, sausages, galettes, and local drinks, including Breton cider. The atmosphere is resolutely convivial and family-friendly, with stands exhibiting maritime heritage, the presence of the SNSM (Société Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer - National Sea Rescue Society), and demonstrations of knot tying and rope making. Admission is completely free, in keeping with the generous and popular spirit of the event.
The Fête de la Belle Angèle 2026 is scheduled for Saturday, August 29th and Sunday, August 30th at the port of Pont-Aven, with the traditional gathering of old sailing ships, concerts, and fireworks.
