Breton dance and music festival in Rostrenen, in the heart of Brittany
The Festival Fisel is a Breton dance and music festival organized every late August in Rostrenen, in central Brittany. Created in 1972, this major event for Breton culture offers fest-noz, concerts, dance and music competitions (Muzik ha Dañs), workshops, street performances, screenings, and guided walks for a week. The festival takes its name from the fisel dance, a local variant of the gavotte, emblematic of the Rostrenen region. Organized by the association La Fiselerie, it showcases both Celtic traditions and world music.
The Festival Fisel is one of the oldest and most important Breton culture festivals. Created in 1972 in Rostrenen, in the heart of inland Brittany, it takes its name from the fisel dance, a local variant of the gavotte specific to the Rostrenen region and its surroundings. This demanding and virtuosic dance step, characterized by fast and precise footwork, is at the core of the festival's identity and is featured in competitions and demonstrations throughout the event.
For six days, the Festival Fisel offers a dense and varied program: fest-noz in the Place du Bourg Coz, concerts of Breton and Celtic music, Muzik ha Dañs competitions (traditional music and dance competitions), dance and instrument workshops, street performances, film screenings, and guided walks in the surrounding countryside. The program also opens up to other musical traditions — Irish, Ethiopian, Manouche swing, electronic music — in a spirit of openness and encounter.
The festival is organized by the association La Fiselerie, which works year-round to promote Breton culture in central Brittany. The setting of Rostrenen, a small town in Kreiz Breizh (central Brittany), offers an authentic and friendly atmosphere. Camping is encouraged, and associative accommodation is available. The Festival Fisel is recognized as a place for transmission and creation, where seasoned dancers, professional musicians, and passionate amateurs meet.
