Les Tréteaux du Phare: Popular Theatre at the End of the World
Since 2020, Les Tréteaux du Phare has brought live theatre to Penmarc'h, a seaside town in the Pays Bigouden located at the southwestern tip of Finistère. This popular theatre festival, born from the passion of actor Jacques Tresse — trained at the École Florent in 1992 and having worked under the direction of Éric Ruf, Jean-Yves Ruf, and other renowned directors — has set itself the mission of offering quality performances and unique experiences to a wide and diverse audience.
A Week of Theatre in the Heart of Penmarc'h
Every August, Les Tréteaux du Phare takes over Penmarc'h for a full week. Performances unfold in the town's emblematic venues: the esplanade of the lighthouse, a spectacular setting facing the ocean; Cap Caval, the town's cultural space; the Espace Océane; and other heritage sites and public spaces. This touring within the town itself allows for a rediscovery of Penmarc'h through the lens of theatre, with each venue offering different acoustics and atmosphere.
The Escales: Theatre Radiates Across the Territory
One of the festival's original features is its Escales (Stopovers), performances scheduled in the neighbouring towns of Haut Pays Bigouden. In partnership with the Communauté de communes du Haut Pays Bigouden, Les Tréteaux du Phare spreads to Plogastel-Saint-Germain, Pouldreuzic, Pont-l'Abbé, and Sainte-Marine, bringing theatre beyond the borders of Penmarc'h and creating cultural bridges between the communities of the region.
An Engaged and Accessible Programme
The programme at Les Tréteaux du Phare favours living, demanding, and accessible theatre. The selected shows cover a wide spectrum of contemporary theatrical creation: comedies, dramas, narratives, revisited classic plays, and original creations. In 2025, the 6th edition notably featured M. Armand dit Garrincha by Serge Valletti, Moman - Pourquoi les méchants sont méchants ?, Maure ou vif, Attraper l'Ange, and Le Bizarre by Jean-Yves Ruf, illustrating the diversity and richness of the programme.
Workshops and Meetings
Beyond the performances, Les Tréteaux du Phare offers theatre workshops for children and adults, led by professional actors. These moments of practice and discovery allow participants to be introduced to the dramatic arts or to deepen their practice in a supportive and stimulating environment. Meetings with artists are also organized, fostering dialogue between creators and audiences.
A Festival on the Rise
In just six editions, Les Tréteaux du Phare has won over a loyal and growing audience. The festival benefits from the support of the municipality of Penmarc'h, the Communauté de communes du Haut Pays Bigouden, and local cultural partners. Ticketing is managed through the Billetweb platform, demonstrating professional organization for an event that aims to become a benchmark for summer theatre in Brittany.
