A 13th-century fortified farm comes back to life
Nestled between Sainte-Suzanne and Chammes, in the heart of Mayenne, the Domaine de la Ferté Clairbois is a faithful reconstruction of a 13th-century fortified farm. It is in this exceptional setting that the association La Mesnie de la Ferté-Clairbois organizes the Féodales de Clairbois every year from April to August: immersive medieval animation days that transport young and old to the heart of the Middle Ages.
A rich program of animations
Every second weekend of the month, the domain comes alive and offers a discovery trail punctuated by living sketches depicting daily life in a medieval fortified farm. Visitors can watch equestrian games, sword fighting demonstrations, and historical reenactments by troops specializing in living history.
Medieval crafts and know-how
Numerous workshops and demonstrations allow visitors to discover medieval trades and techniques: blacksmithing, calligraphy, heraldry, weaving, medieval cooking, archery, axe throwing, and medieval games. A reconstructed medieval garden completes this immersion into the daily life of the 12th and 13th centuries.
Artisan market and tavern
An artisan market brings together creators offering objects inspired by the Middle Ages: jewelry, leather goods, pottery, decorative weapons, and period clothing. The Clairbois tavern offers dishes and drinks inspired by medieval gastronomy, while a fast-food area allows visitors to eat on site.
Visit the keep and the domain
Visitors can also explore the keep and the entire fortified domain, accompanied by historical commentary. This visit helps to understand the defensive organization and daily life within a fortified farm in medieval Mayenne.
A family-friendly and accessible event
Les Féodales de Clairbois are designed as a family event: admission is free for children under 12, and many activities are specifically designed for younger audiences. The participatory workshops allow children to try their hand at calligraphy, archery, or medieval games in a safe and fun environment.
A unique heritage setting in Mayenne
Sainte-Suzanne-et-Chammes, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, offers an ideal setting for this event. The medieval town perched on its rocky outcrop, with its ramparts and castle, is a natural complement to the visit of the Domaine de Clairbois. The event actively contributes to the promotion of Mayenne's medieval heritage and the tourist appeal of the Coëvrons region.
