About Les Pontorsonnades

Established in 2012 by the local tourist office and the municipality, Les Pontorsonnades is the medieval festival of Pontorson, located at the gateway to Mont-Saint-Michel. For one weekend in June, the town center transforms into a medieval village: equestrian shows, combat displays, dancing, storytelling, wandering troupes of costumed performers and beggars, artisan camps, a medieval market, and children's activities—all with free access at the Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville.

The festival is now held every two years: following the June 2023 and June 2025 editions, there will be no Pontorsonnades in 2026. The Pontorson Festival Committee has announced the return of the medieval celebration in 2027.

Getting to Pontorson

Pontorson is served by the Pontorson – Mont-Saint-Michel train station (Caen – Rennes line) and is located near the RD 976 and the A84 motorway. The town is a classic base for visiting Mont-Saint-Michel: hotels, bed and breakfasts, and campsites should be booked in advance during the summer season.

Les Pontorsonnades: Pontorson turns back the clock

As a historic gateway to Mont-Saint-Michel, Pontorson preserves the memory of its medieval past: the fortress commissioned by William the Conqueror and the town later held by Bertrand du Guesclin. Created in 2012 by the tourist office in partnership with the municipality, Les Pontorsonnades bring this history to life for a weekend in June, attracting families from across the bay, both from Normandy and neighboring Brittany.

A town center transformed into a medieval village

The heart of the festival beats at the Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville and the surrounding streets, where the medieval market and encampment are set up. Costumed musical troupes roam throughout the weekend, groups of "beggars" engage with passersby, and visitors are encouraged to dress up to fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere.

Shows, combat, and ancient crafts

The program features a mix of equestrian shows, combat demonstrations, dancing, and storytelling. At the camp, the forge is active, and you can discover the daily life of a medieval troupe, the craft of weaving, or even visit a fortune teller. Market artisans showcase their creations inspired by the Middle Ages.

A children's village

Younger visitors have their own dedicated area: knighting ceremonies, wooden games, axe throwing, escape games, face painting, and free workshops throughout the day. This is a hallmark of the festival, which is designed to be popular, family-friendly, and entirely free.

Themed editions

Some editions follow a specific historical theme: in 2016, the festival focused on William the Conqueror and the birth of Normandy; in 2018, the Vikings took over the town on June 16 and 17.

A biennial event: nothing in 2026, returning in 2027

After years of an irregular schedule, Les Pontorsonnades now take place every two years: June 24 and 25, 2023, followed by June 28 and 29, 2025. No edition is scheduled for 2026: the official agenda for the City of Pontorson for June 2026 makes no mention of it. However, the Festival Committee has announced the next edition for 2027. Specific dates have not yet been released; they are traditionally set for a weekend in late June.

Organization

Les Pontorsonnades are organized by the Pontorson Festival Committee, with the support of the municipality and the Mont-Saint-Michel – Normandy Tourist Office. The festival opens on Saturday afternoon until the evening and runs all day Sunday, with on-site catering in the spirit of the era.
