The Bazouges-la-Pérouse Pommé Festival

Bazouges-la-Pérouse, a "Petite Cité de Caractère" in northern Ille-et-Vilaine, celebrates its signature local specialty, pommé, every autumn. The festival is organized by the Comité des Fêtes and the Confrérie du Pommé Bazougeais. The 46th edition takes place on October 19, 2025, following the 44th edition on October 14-15, 2023, and the 41st from October 18-20, 2019.

What is pommé?

Pommé is a spread similar to jam, made exclusively from apples stirred into freshly pressed apple juice with no other ingredients. It has a caramel-like flavor with a subtle hint of prune. During World War II, it served as a substitute for butter, which was often used as currency, earning it the nickname "poor man's butter." The traditional village-style pommé requires 24 hours of cooking; locals would take turns "ramaouger" (stirring the pot), keeping the vigil until the early hours of the morning.

What to expect

The 2025 program includes pommé production and sales, an artisanal market, an 8 km hike, a pommé cake competition, chainsaw wood carving, performances by Bro Felger and Patagwen, a fest-noz with Shamvn, and food and drink stalls. On the eve of the festival, the Confrérie du Pommé Bazougeais holds its Chapter, featuring a musical parade through the town, induction ceremonies, and a gourmet dinner at the village hall, which must be booked through the tourist office.

The dates vary from year to year and do not follow a fixed schedule. The festival committee announces each edition on their Facebook page, typically between August and late September.
