Reliving the Glorious Days of a 12th Century Commune
Since 2021, the commune of Beauchastel has been organizing a Medieval Festival every summer in its perched old village. The event aims to highlight the historical past of this Ardèche commune, whose origins date back to the 12th century, and to strengthen cohesion between the historic village and the modern lower town. In just a few editions, the medieval festival has become a must-attend summer event in Ardèche.
Parades, Investitures, and Combat in the Old Village Streets
The medieval festival transforms the cobbled streets and squares of the old village into a living medieval setting. Costumed parades wind through the narrow streets lined with stone houses, knightly investiture ceremonies take place in a solemn setting, and armored combat enlivens the village squares. Acrobats, jugglers, and medieval musicians accompany the festivities throughout the day.
Fire Shows and Evening Entertainment
Saturday evenings are marked by spectacular fire shows. Fire-eaters and torch jugglers illuminate the stone walls of the old village, creating a magical and enchanting atmosphere. Entertainment continues until midnight on Saturdays, offering an immersive experience into the medieval night.
An Exceptional Heritage Setting
The old village of Beauchastel, perched on a rocky outcrop above the Eyrieux river, offers an exceptional heritage setting for this medieval festival. The stone houses, the calades (cobbled alleys), the vaulted passages, and the remains of the feudal castle naturally immerse visitors in the medieval atmosphere. The panoramic view over the Eyrieux valley adds to the magic of the place. Visitors are encouraged to come in period costumes to fully participate in the medieval atmosphere.
