The only medieval Christmas market in Alsace
Unique in its kind, the Medieval Christmas Market of Ribeauvillé plunges visitors into a magical medieval atmosphere during the first two weekends of December. Period costumes, troubadours, fire-eaters, artisans in medieval attire, and ancient culinary specialties transform the city of the Minstrels into a true journey through time. Redesigned in 2020 under the artistic direction of Antoine Helbert, this market has become one of the most popular and atypical in France.
Ribeauvillé, nicknamed the city of the Minstrels in homage to its medieval tradition of traveling musicians, offers the only medieval-themed Christmas market in Alsace. For two weekends in December, the Grand'Rue and its historic squares transform into a lively medieval town where merchants, artisans, and performers in period costumes recreate the atmosphere of a medieval Christmas. The town, dominated by the three castles of the lords of Ribeaupierre, provides an exceptional natural setting for this timeless celebration.
In 2020, the absence of the market was used to completely rethink the concept under the artistic direction of Antoine Helbert, in collaboration with all local associations: the Association des Rappolstein, the Comité des Fêtes, the Association des Commerçants, the Amicale du Personnel Communal, and L'Eguenolphe. The result is a market of remarkable quality, where every detail — decorations, costumes, entertainment, gastronomy — is designed to offer total immersion in the medieval world.
The market stalls exclusively offer artisanal and local products, excluding any imported items. Artisans in period attire present their creations: ironwork, pottery, leatherwork, jewelry, illuminations, and carved wooden objects. On the gastronomic side, visitors discover the flavors of yesteryear: spit-roasted wild boar, hypocras (medieval mulled wine with spices), ancient vegetable soup, wood-fired bread, and honey sweets. Alsace wines from Ribeauvillé accompany these dishes in the improvised taverns.
The market is punctuated by ongoing entertainment that delights young and old alike. Troubadours and musicians wander the streets, jugglers and acrobats offer their feats, and fire-eaters illuminate the winter evenings. Falconry shows, choreographed sword fights, and medieval tales complete the program. As night falls, the atmosphere becomes magical with costumed fantasy characters emerging from the torch-lit alleys.
The town of Ribeauvillé prioritizes the quality of the experience over mass attendance. The historic center is entirely pedestrianized during the market, closed off and secured by barriers. Organizers encourage visitors to take their time to soak in the unique atmosphere, explore every corner of the decorated streets, and participate in the events. It is this philosophy that makes the Medieval Christmas Market of Ribeauvillé a unique experience in the Alsatian Christmas market landscape.
The 2026 edition of the Medieval Christmas Market of Ribeauvillé will be held on December 5-6 and 12-13. The only medieval Christmas market in Alsace will offer its period costume entertainment, authentic crafts, and medieval gastronomy in the pedestrianized historic center of the city of the Minstrels.
Ribeauvillé is located on the Alsace Wine Route, between Colmar (15 km) and Sélestat (12 km).
