Artisanal Christmas market in the troglodytic cellars of the Donjon de Montrichard
Every year in December, the Montrichard Val de Cher Festival Committee organizes an authentic and warm Christmas market in the unique setting of the Donjon Cellars, at the foot of the medieval fortress overlooking the Cher valley. Artisans, creators, and local producers take over these troglodytic cellars to offer gift ideas, delicacies, Christmas decorations, and local products. The intimate atmosphere and the magic of the place offer a unique Christmas experience, far from conventional markets, in a historic setting steeped in a thousand years of history.
For several years, the Montrichard Val de Cher Festival Committee has been organizing an artisanal Christmas market in an exceptional location: the Donjon Cellars, located at the foot of the imposing medieval fortress that has watched over the town and the Cher valley since the 12th century. This unique troglodytic setting gives the event an intimate and magical atmosphere, between stone vaults and candlelight.
The market brings together a carefully selected group of artisans, creators, and local producers from the Val de Cher and Touraine. Visitors can discover:
The market is punctuated by festive entertainment throughout the day. Children can meet Santa Claus in his chalet in the heart of the cellars. Creative workshops are offered for the younger ones, while adults warm up with mulled wine or hot chocolate prepared on-site. Christmas music and carols accompany the stroll between the stalls.
The Donjon Cellars are carved into the tuffeau, the characteristic white limestone of the Loire and Cher valleys. Used for centuries for storing wine and food, these underground galleries offer a constant temperature and a unique acoustics that enhance the magical atmosphere of the market. Above, the Donjon de Montrichard, built in the 12th century by the d'Amboise family, offers an exceptional panorama of the Cher valley and the historic town.
Located in the heart of the Cher Valley, between Tours and Blois, the commune of Montrichard Val de Cher is renowned for its medieval heritage, its troglodytic cellars, and its wine tradition. The Christmas market is part of a rich festive calendar that animates the town throughout the year and contributes to the commercial and tourist dynamism of this Loire region.
