Largentière Rediscovers Its Medieval Past

L'Argentaria derives its name from the historical designation of Largentière, a mining town whose silver mines brought it wealth in the Middle Ages. This festival of medieval cultures, organized in odd-numbered years by the association "Au-Delà du Temps", plunges the Ardèche town back into its glorious past for a weekend in August. The Château de Largentière, leased to the association by the municipality, serves as the main setting for these festivities, which spill into the streets and squares of the old town.

Jousting Tournament and Spectacular Fights

The highlight of L'Argentaria is the jousting tournament organized according to the rules of the International Combat League. Armored combat teams clash in spectacular melees that keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Individual duels, medieval fencing demonstrations, and weapon handling initiations complete this martial aspect of the festival. Participants, coming from all over France and Europe, offer an impressive spectacle of strength and skill.

Medieval Ball, Banquet, and Market

L'Argentaria goes far beyond a simple tournament. A medieval ball invites participants to dance to the rhythm of period music, while the medieval banquet offers a culinary immersion into the flavors of the Middle Ages. The artisan market brings together craftspeople perpetuating ancestral know-how: blacksmithing, stone carving, leatherwork, pottery, and illumination. Street performances, medieval music concerts, and activities at the castle complete the program.

Le Temps des Chevaliers: Summer Activities at the Castle

Throughout the summer, the association "Au-Delà du Temps" offers "Le Temps des Chevaliers" within the walls of the Château de Largentière. This troupe of actors, all specialists in medieval crafts, creates and performs living history shows and participatory workshops. Visitors are immersed in the daily life of the Middle Ages through humorous sketches and demonstrations of ancient trades (architecture, stone carving, blacksmithing). The medieval restoration site of the castle is a permanent attraction.
