Discover Mende's heritage during an exceptional weekend
Every year, on the third weekend of September, Mende participates in the European Heritage Days, a national event organized by the Ministry of Culture. For two days, residents and visitors are invited to discover or rediscover the exceptional heritage of the Lozère prefecture thanks to a varied and entirely free program.
The Heritage Days are an opportunity to open the doors of places usually closed to the public or to revisit the great monuments of the city:
Thematic guided tours are offered throughout the weekend, focusing on the city's history, architecture, religious heritage, and know-how. Conferences and meetings with heritage specialists complete the program.
All tours and activities are free, with some guided tours requiring prior reservation due to limited capacity. The Heritage Days in Mende are aimed at all audiences, from history enthusiasts to families wishing to discover their city in a different way.
Prefecture of Lozère, Mende has remarkable architectural heritage: its 14th-century Gothic cathedral, its medieval streets, its private mansions, its Notre-Dame bridge, and its ancient fountains bear witness to a rich history that is revealed during these exceptional days.

The European Heritage Days return to Mende on September 19 and 20, 2026 for their 43rd national edition. The event, organized by the Ministry of Culture, is locally supported by the City of Mende in conjunction with the Musée du Gévaudan and the Cœur de Lozère Tourist Office.
Two national themes are highlighted this year: « Heritage of Photography », which celebrates the bicentenary of photography, and « Heritage in Danger: revive, resist, reimagine », a European theme dedicated to the preservation of cultural heritage.
In Mende, the weekend is an opportunity to visit the Musée du Gévaudan, Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Privat Cathedral for free, and to discover, during open days and thematic guided tours, the monuments and streets of the historic center. The detailed program for the Mende edition will be published on the website of the City of Mende and the Tourist Office closer to the event.
Visits take place in the historic center of Mende and in various monuments of the city.
Some guided tours have limited capacity and require prior reservation with the Tourist Office.
