A weekend dedicated to heritage

Every year, on the third weekend of September, Mende takes part in the European Heritage Days organized by the Ministry of Culture. For two days, the prefecture of Lozère opens its monuments and collections to the public, free of charge.

Open sites

The Musée du Gévaudan is open both days, offering thematic tours of its permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. The Ancienne Pharmacie and the Lamartine media library, which houses a historical collection of around 8,000 works, also open their doors. Guided tours lead visitors to the Tour des Pénitents and its chapel, the Town Hall, the three cultural venues—Espace des Anges, Maison Consulaire, and Théâtre de Mende—as well as religious buildings that remain closed for the rest of the year, such as the chapelle de l'Évêché or the chapelle de la Providence.

A free event

All tours and activities are free. As capacity is limited, most guided tours require booking; registration opens in early September through the Tourist Office, the Musée du Gévaudan, or the Pays d'Art et d'Histoire, depending on the tour.

Mende, a city of heritage

The Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Privat, which began construction in the 14th century, dominates the old town. Surrounding it are medieval alleys, private mansions, the Notre-Dame bridge, and several fountains.
