The convivial and gourmet festival of autumn in the Cévennes
The history of the Soup Festival began in 2001, near a fireplace where chestnuts were roasting, when a small group of friends sought a way to bring families, friends, and vacationers together in good spirits and conviviality before winter arrived. With a bit of imagination, a small budget, and a lot of energy, they organized a first evening celebration with a great soup competition, lots of decorations in the town, and already some performances. The success was immediate, and the adventure has continued ever since.
The highlight of the festival is the Soup Competition, which invites residents and visitors to prepare their best recipe and submit it to the judgment of a gourmet jury. Participants come down into the streets of Florac with ladles and pots to share their creations during the famous "Apérisoupes", moments of collective tasting enlivened by brass bands. Local restaurateurs also offer soups specially prepared for the occasion, transforming the entire town center into a huge open-air banquet.
Beyond gastronomy, the Soup Festival unfolds a rich cultural and artistic program over two days. Concerts, strolling brass bands, and street performances liven up the squares and alleys of Florac. A farmers' market brings together local producers from the Cévennes and Lozère, showcasing the products of the Cévennes region. Activities for children are offered throughout the festival, and the days end with music and popular dances.
Each year, the festival offers a dancing hike in the heights of Florac, combining discovery of the Cévennes landscape with artistic moments. Animated by dancers and musicians, this walk punctuated by a picnic offers an original way to discover the natural heritage of the Cévennes National Park while participating in the celebration. Radio Bartas, the local radio station, accompanies the festival with youth radio workshops and live radio shows with the artists.
Among the festival's curiosities is an exhibition of whimsical soup tureens, inviting artists and amateurs to compete in imagination to create the most original, poetic, or outlandish containers. This exhibition, which has become a must-see event, adds an artistic and quirky touch to this joyfully popular celebration.
The festival is organized by the association Les Gens de la Soupe (The Soup People), a non-profit organization (law 1901) that brings together passionate volunteers from Florac and the surrounding area. For over twenty years, this volunteer team has prepared each new edition with the same enthusiasm, true to the original spirit: conviviality, sharing, good humor, and accessibility for all. Admission to the festival is completely free.
The Soup Festival returns for its 26th edition in Florac-Trois-Rivières at the end of October 2026. Two days of celebration, gourmet, and artistic wandering in the heart of the Cévennes National Park.
