Les Castagnades — edition 2026

The 27th edition of the Castagnades brings together eleven chestnut festivals from October 10 to November 8, 2026, across eleven villages in the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Natural Park. Each village has its own date and program, starting in Saint-Pierreville on October 10 and concluding in Joannas on November 8. The central theme this year is the 20th anniversary of the AOP châtaigne d'Ardèche, celebrated at every event. The program features farmers' markets, roasted chestnut stands, chestnut grove hikes, grafting demonstrations, culinary challenges, and street performances.

Eleven festivals, eleven villages, one month of seasonal celebration

The Castagnades do not take place in just one location. From October 10 to November 8, 2026, eleven villages within the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Natural Park will each host their own chestnut festival on specific dates. Visitors should check the village and date before planning their trip.

A "Castagnades – Châtaigne d'Ardèche AOP" stand, managed by the Monts d'Ardèche Park and the Interprofessional Committee for the Châtaigne d'Ardèche, will be present at all festivals. The culinary competition organized by the Confrérie de la châtaigne d'Ardèche will follow the theme: "Birthday Cake: Celebrate the AOP châtaigne d'Ardèche."

More than 65 traditional varieties can be tasted throughout the season, including the bouche rouge, sardonne, and comballe.

Chestnuts: The Crown Jewel of the Ardèche

The Castagnades were launched in 2000 by the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Natural Park to celebrate the chestnut, the iconic fruit of the Ardèche region often called the "bread tree." For centuries, chestnut trees sustained the people of the Monts d'Ardèche and shaped the mid-mountain landscape. The Castagnades highlight the local chestnut industry and introduce the public to the rich culture surrounding this fruit.

A Month of Festivities Across Eleven Villages

Every autumn, from October to November, the Castagnades travel from village to village, with each town hosting its own unique date and program. In 2026, the eleven participating villages are Saint-Pierreville, Jaujac, Privas, Joyeuse, Désaignes, Saint-Laurent-les-Bains-Laval-d'Aurelle, Antraigues, Saint-André-Lachamp, Chalencon, Vesseaux, and Joannas. The list of participating villages changes from year to year.

Markets, Tastings, and Local Expertise

The Castagnades program features markets where growers sell fresh chestnuts, chestnut cream, chestnut flour, preserves, and liqueurs, as well as roasted chestnuts prepared on traditional grills, culinary demonstrations by chefs, and grafting workshops. The "Châtaigne Gourmande" challenge, organized by the Confrérie de la châtaigne d'Ardèche, pits amateur cooks against one another on a new theme each year, culminating in a departmental final at the season's last festival.

Hiking, Entertainment, and Heritage

The program also includes hikes through chestnut groves, tours of farms and orchards, children's activities, concerts, exhibitions, and parades by local guilds. Two sites are open year-round: the Maison du Châtaignier in Saint-Pierreville and Castanea, the Ardèche chestnut discovery center in Joyeuse.

Twenty-Seven Years Strong

In 2026, the Castagnades celebrate their 27th edition. The central theme for this year is the 20th anniversary of the AOP châtaigne d'Ardèche.
