About Christmas in Obernai

The Obernai Christmas Market is one of the most charming in Alsace. From late November to late December, around 45 wooden chalets spread across five squares in the historic center, nestled amidst half-timbered houses and natural fir tree decorations. This market stands out for its dual gastronomic and artisanal identity, its signature mulled wine served from the winemakers' cauldron, its Asian nativity scenes, its Christmas concerts, and a family treasure hunt. An authentic and intimate market, far from the crowds of large tourist markets.

A charming setting for an authentic Alsatian Christmas

When the first garlands light up at the foot of the Kappelturm belfry and the scent of mulled wine fills the alleys, Obernai transforms into a picture-postcard Christmas village. The Gastronomy and Craftsmanship Christmas Market has been held in the historic center of this medieval town, one of the most picturesque on the Alsace Wine Route, since the 1990s.

Forty-five chalets across five squares

Approximately 45 wooden chalets are spread across five squares in the historic center, creating an enchanting route between half-timbered houses, fountains, and Renaissance monuments. The new feature for 2025 is the Cour Athic, which hosts 7 additional chalets and outdoor works by artist Georges Ratkoff, for an artistic break in the heart of the market.

The dual signature: gastronomy and craftsmanship

The Obernai market is distinguished by its dual identity. On the gastronomy side: foie gras, bredele, chocolates, gingerbread, jams, and of course the famous mulled wine from the winemakers' cauldron, prepared according to a secret recipe from local winemakers, a true signature of the market. On the craftsmanship side: ceramics, handmade candles, handcrafted Christmas decorations, Alsatian textiles, wooden toys, and creations by local artists.

Original entertainment

The Christmas program in Obernai is full of surprises:

  • Exhibition of Asian Nativity Scenes: a unique collection presented in an exceptional venue.
  • Christmas Concerts: recitals and choirs in Obernai's churches.
  • Family Treasure Hunt: a fun trail through the historic center for all ages.
  • Storytelling Walk: evening walks to discover Alsatian Christmas legends.
  • Winemakers' Mulled Wine: tasting at the large cauldron in the Market Square.

A human-sized market

Away from the crowds of large tourist Christmas markets, Obernai offers an intimate and authentic experience. The manageable size of the market allows you to take your time to discover each chalet, chat with the artisans, and savor the unique atmosphere of a traditional Alsatian Christmas. The natural decor—fir trees, mistletoe, holly, and subtle illuminations—prioritizes elegance and authenticity.
