The Pilgrimage of Mary Magdalene in Vézelay: A Millennial Spiritual Rendezvous

Every July 22nd, the feast day of Saint Mary Magdalene, thousands of pilgrims and visitors gather in Vézelay (89450) for the annual pilgrimage to the Basilica of Saint Mary Magdalene. This Burgundian sanctuary, one of the most revered in Western Christendom, has welcomed the faithful since the 9th century seeking grace and contemplation at the relics of Mary Magdalene.

A Place Steeped in History and Spirituality

The Basilica of Vézelay is an exceptional monument in more ways than one. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, it is a masterpiece of 12th-century Burgundian Romanesque architecture. Its narthex and central nave, adorned with sculpted capitals, are among the most accomplished examples of Romanesque art in France.

Vézelay is also one of the four major starting points for the Ways of Saint James of Compostela in France, the Via Lemovicensis. It was here that Saint Bernard preached the Second Crusade in 1146 before King Louis VII and an immense crowd, and where Saint Francis of Assisi founded the first Franciscan friary outside Italy.

The Fraternity of Jerusalem and the Spiritual Life of Vézelay

Since 1997, the Monastic Fraternity of Jerusalem has been responsible for the permanent spiritual animation of the basilica. Brothers and sisters of the fraternity celebrate the Divine Office daily and welcome pilgrims in a spirit of evangelical hospitality. Their presence gives the sanctuary of Vézelay a spiritual radiance that extends far beyond the borders of Burgundy.
