Comics come to the Giffre valley
The Taninges Comic Strip Festival, organized by the MJC as part of the "Du Giffre et des Gaffes" event, is an annual gathering dedicated to comic strips in the heart of the Giffre valley in Haute-Savoie. Every April, the town of Taninges hosts a week of meetings with authors, drawing workshops, exhibitions, screenings, and activities centered around the ninth art, in a friendly and accessible atmosphere that appeals to the valley's residents and comic strip enthusiasts from across the department.
Nestled in the heart of the Giffre Valley, between the Haut-Giffre massif and the slopes of Praz de Lys Sommand, the town of Taninges is an unexpected yet charming location for a comic strip festival. It is here that the MJC of Taninges (Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture) organizes an original event each April called "Du Giffre et des Gaffes" — a playful nod to the local river's name and the world of Gaston Lagaffe.
This small-scale but high-quality festival relies on volunteer commitment and local roots. It caters to both the children from the valley's schools and comic strip enthusiasts from the entire department, contributing to the cultural vibrancy of a rural mountain area often far from major urban cultural events.
The Taninges Comic Strip Festival unfolds over one week in April, with a highlight on the weekend. The program combines several complementary formats:
The MJC of Taninges is the driving force behind the festival. As a popular education center located in the Giffre Valley, it offers a diverse cultural program throughout the year — theater, music, creative workshops, outings — and has made comic strips a key focus with this annual festival. The event is supported by the Communauté de communes des Montagnes du Giffre, the municipality of Taninges, and local partners.
The festival contributes to the cultural vitality of this authentic Alpine valley, where the machining industry coexists with mountain tourism, and where Savoyard traditions blend with a dynamic associative life.
The cantonal capital of the Giffre Valley, Taninges is a charming Savoyard town located at an altitude of 640 meters, halfway between Cluses and Samoëns. The Chartreuse de Mélan, a 13th-century historical monument housing a cultural center, and the lively weekly market make Taninges an essential hub of local life. The comic strip festival is part of this dynamic, bringing a touch of creativity and fantasy to the heart of the valley each spring.
2026 edition of the Taninges Comic Strip Festival "Du Giffre et des Gaffes". A week of activities around comic strips in the Giffre Valley: author meetings, workshops, exhibitions, and screenings.
The Taninges Comic Strip Festival returns in April 2026 for a new edition of the "Du Giffre et des Gaffes" event. The MJC of Taninges is preparing a week of meetings, workshops, exhibitions, and screenings centered around the ninth art, in keeping with the friendly and accessible spirit that makes this annual event so successful in the Giffre Valley.
