Trail in the heart of the vineyards and cadoles of Les Riceys
The Trail des Cadoles is a trail running race organized every year in October in Les Riceys, in the Aube department. Supported by the Amicale Laique des Riceys, this sporting event offers three distances (9 km, 17 km, and 34 km) through the exceptional wine-growing landscapes of the Cote des Bar, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Runners weave through the Champagne hillsides and discover the cadoles, these typical dry stone huts of the vineyard, vestiges of traditional rural architecture. A portion of the registration fees is donated to a local charity.
The Trail des Cadoles gets its name from the cadoles, these small dry stone constructions scattered throughout the vineyards of the Cote des Bar. Once used by winegrowers as temporary shelters, these huts bear witness to an ancestral know-how of mortarless construction, passed down from generation to generation. It is amidst these stone sentinels that runners set off each autumn, covering winding paths between the rows of vines, the undergrowth, and the hillsides that make the Champagne appellation renowned.
The event offers three distances adapted to different levels of practice:
The largest commune in Champagne, Les Riceys is the only one to benefit from three appellations of controlled origin: Champagne, Coteaux Champenois, and Rosé des Riceys. This picturesque village, composed of three historic hamlets (Ricey-Bas, Ricey-Haute-Rive, and Ricey-Haut), possesses remarkable architectural heritage with its three listed churches, its half-timbered winegrower houses, and its centuries-old cellars. The Trail des Cadoles allows participants to discover this exceptional terroir while exercising in a preserved natural setting.
Organized by the Amicale Laique des Riceys, the Trail des Cadoles is distinguished by its warm and family-friendly atmosphere. The start and finish are located at the Parc du Chateau Saint-Louis (town hall), where runners will find a welcome village with fast food, a refreshment stand, medical assistance, and restrooms. Parking is available on Rue du Parc Saint-Vincent. The event also donates a portion of its proceeds to a local charity, combining sporting challenge with solidarity. With nearly 500 participants each year, the trail has become a must-attend event on the Aube sports calendar.
The 12th edition of the Trail des Cadoles is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026, in Les Riceys. The event will offer its usual three courses of 9, 17, and 34 km through the vineyards of the Cote des Bar and at the foot of the dry stone cadoles.
