Intimate classical and baroque music concerts in a thousand-year-old castle overlooking the Loire
The Musical Evenings at the Château de Lavoûte-Polignac are a summer gathering for classical and baroque music in a thousand-year-old castle overlooking the Loire, in Lavoûte-sur-Loire, Haute-Loire. Since 2000, the Duke of Polignac has opened his residence for intimate concerts bringing together pianists, violinists, and chamber musicians in the castle's vaulted salons and gardens. Built on a rocky outcrop fourteen kilometers from Le Puy-en-Velay, this setting combines remarkable acoustics and heritage, making these evenings a cultural gem of the wild Loire.
The Château de Lavoûte-Polignac has dominated the Loire for over a thousand years, perched on a rocky spur around which the river draws a spectacular meander. Classified as a historical monument by decree on January 13, 2022, this architectural gem has belonged to the Polignac family since the 13th century and houses a remarkable collection of art objects, paintings, and archives intimately linked to the history of France. It was in this exceptional setting that the Musical Evenings were born in 2000, at the initiative of the Duke of Polignac, who wished to make classical music resonate within the ancient walls of his residence. The castle derives its name from the Loire meander – 'volta' meaning loop – and was partially rebuilt in the 19th century, respecting ancient models, blending elements from the 14th, mid-17th, and late 19th centuries.
Each summer, the castle opens its medieval and Renaissance-inspired salons and gardens to host classical and baroque music concerts. The intimate atmosphere of the place – far from large concert halls – creates a rare closeness between artists and the audience. Pianists, violinists, chamber music ensembles, and baroque groups perform in a setting where the natural acoustics of the vaulted salons magnify every note. When the weather permits, some concerts are held outdoors, in the castle gardens, with the Loire as a backdrop.
The programming of the Musical Evenings favors the classical and baroque repertoire: sonatas by Brahms and Saint-Saëns, pieces by Schubert, concertos by Bach, baroque suites, and chamber works by Mozart and Beethoven. The invited artists are top-level musicians, including winners of international competitions and renowned chamber musicians. Pianist Laurent Martin and violinist David Petrlik are among the regular performers at these evenings, offering programs that combine virtuosity and musical sensitivity in the remarkable acoustics of the castle's vaulted salons.

By combining excellent chamber music with a remarkable historical site, they contribute to the cultural and tourist influence of this rural territory on the outskirts of Le Puy-en-Velay. The castle, open for visits from Easter to All Saints' Day, also features temporary exhibitions complementing its summer musical program. Each concert is followed by a friendly gathering bringing together artists and the public, in the warm spirit of a human-sized festival where music is shared with simplicity.
