This week, a village fair is holding its own against the big cultural machines. In Beaumont-de-Lomagne, a garlic market draws a bigger crowd than you'd expect, under 14th-century Gothic halls. A few miles away, Carcassonne and Marciac keep running their long summer seasons for tens of thousands of visitors each. Our pick of the weekend goes to the Fête de l'Ail Blanc de Lomagne: an entire Sunday built around one vegetable, under gothic vaults, with a thousand-seat meal served in one sitting. Fête de l'Ail Blanc de Lomagne (82): a whole Sunday devoted to Tarn-et-Garonne's signature crop
On Sunday July 26, Beaumont-de-Lomagne sets up its producers' market under 14th-century Gothic market halls. The Fête de l'Ail Blanc de Lomagne serves a thousand-cover meal built around garlic soup and duck confit. Direct sales of PGI white garlic, festive entertainment, a village-fête feel at human scale. Nothing flashy here — the charm sits in the details: the medieval hall, the smell of roasted garlic, the chatter between neighbours at the long tables. A one-day tradition, no fuss, worth the detour if you're passing through Tarn-et-Garonne that Sunday.
Festival de Carcassonne (11): the Cité's long season of live shows carries on
Since late June, the medieval Cité of Carcassonne has hosted its Festival de Carcassonne every evening, running through July 31. Launched in 2006, it draws more than 200,000 visitors each summer, with around 150 shows across roughly ten stages. Pop concerts, rock, classical music and theatre follow one another beneath the UNESCO-listed ramparts. This weekend falls within the festival's closing stretch, ahead of its late-July finish. The setting alone justifies the trip — few festivals can offer a backdrop like floodlit medieval walls.
Jazz in Marciac (32): three weeks of legends under the big top
Since July 20 and through August 5, Marciac hosts Jazz in Marciac, founded in 1978 in this small Gers village. It's now the biggest jazz festival in France, and one of the most respected worldwide. The legendary marquee on Place du Chevalier d'Antras has seen Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall and Robert Plant pass through over the years. This weekend lands right in the middle of the programme, at the festival's halfway point. A festival that turned a Gers village into an international gathering, without losing its open-air fête atmosphere.
Fêtes de la Madeleine in Beaucaire (30): Camargue tradition since 1464
From July 21 through July 27, Beaucaire runs on the rhythm of its Fêtes de la Madeleine. The event descends from a fair created in 1464 to revive the local economy after the Hundred Years' War. Bullfights at the Arènes Paul Laurent, abrivado, bandido: the whole week follows the calendar of Camargue and Provençal tradition. This weekend marks the fair's home stretch, before the curtain falls on Monday. Beaucaire, a small Gard town, transforms completely — crowded streets, bulls at the centre of attention, an atmosphere that owes nothing to anyone else.
Festival Equestria in Tarbes (65): horses take over at the foot of the Pyrenees
From July 21 to 26, the Haras de Tarbes hosts Festival Equestria. Founded in 1997, this family-friendly gathering blends equestrian shows, demonstrations and meetings between riders and artists. More than 47,000 visitors turn up each year, beneath the Pyrenees. The programme runs across several days, building to a high point this very weekend, the closing dates of the 2026 edition. A family festival, built for the curious as much as for horse enthusiasts, in a heritage site tied to horse breeding for generations.
Estivada — Occitan Festival in Sébazac-Concourès (12): Occitan culture, popular style
From July 22 to 26, Sébazac-Concourès, six kilometres from Rodez, hosts the Estivada. This pan-Occitan festival was born in 1995 in Rodez, before evolving across its editions. Multidisciplinary and free, it brings together music, dance and Occitan culture in a deliberately popular mood. This weekend marks the close of the 2026 edition, five days after it opened. A direct way to experience the Occitan language and culture without a museum or a history book — just concerts, dancing, and crowds in the streets.
Africajarc in Cajarc (46): a Lot village on an African beat
From July 23 to 26, the village of Cajarc in the Lot comes alive with Africajarc. Created in 1999, this multidisciplinary festival is devoted to African cultures: concerts, film, literature, storytelling, exhibitions, dance and percussion workshops. A large craft market rounds out the programme on Place du Foirail. Four days are enough to turn this Lot village into a small cultural capital, far from any cliché about rural France sleeping through the summer. A steady bet for more than twenty years, carried by a local association and a loyal audience.
Les Féeries du Pont du Gard (30): son et lumière on the ancient monument
Since July 4 and through August 30, the Pont du Gard hosts Les Féeries du Pont du Gard on a weekly basis. Created in 1993, this light show celebrates its 34th edition in 2026. The UNESCO-listed monument serves as the backdrop for a lighting design that changes with the season. This weekend sits right in the busiest stretch of summer for the show. Watching the Roman aqueduct light up after dark is a fairly different experience from the daytime visit — quieter, more intimate.
Fêtes des Bandas en Basse Ariège in Mazères (09): brass takes over the bastide
On July 25 and 26, Mazères, a medieval bastide town in Ariège, hosts the Festival des Bandas en Basse Ariège. The free event gathers hundreds of banda and brass-band musicians in the streets every year. Run by the association Bandas en Basse Ariège with the local Comité des Fêtes, it turns the bastide into an open-air stage. Brass and percussion ring out all weekend, with no tickets and no grandstands. A popular gathering built for walking through the streets rather than sitting in front of a stage — the atmosphere builds as you wander.
Les Courts du Château in Montclus (30): cinema moves into the castle courtyard
On July 25 and 26, the courtyard of the Château de Montclus, in the Gard, hosts Les Courts du Château. This young film festival, launched in 2025 by the Association des Amis du Château de Montclus with Tripode Production, screens short and feature films outdoors. Family-friendly programming, aimed partly at young audiences, with a few previews thrown in. Only its second edition, but the idea already works: watching a film under the stars, in a castle courtyard, far from any regular cinema. A still low-key format worth following in years to come.
Trail de Toulouse Métropole (31): a race to close out the sporting week
On July 24 and 25, Toulouse hosts the Trail de Toulouse Métropole. Created in 1991, the event marks its 36th edition in 2026. This sporting gathering sends amateurs and competitors alike onto routes running through the Pink City and its surroundings. Saturday carries most of the action, with staggered starts and finish lines followed by crowds. A different way to experience Toulouse than through its café terraces and Garonne riverbanks, for anyone who'd rather lace up trainers than flip-flops that weekend.
Presqu'île Blues in Ambialet (81): two nights of blues on a Tarn river bend
On July 25 and 26, the Ambialet peninsula, in the Tarn valley, hosts Presqu'île Blues. Created in 2008 by the association Presqu'île Music, this free festival offers two evenings of open-air concerts: root blues, folk blues, blues rock and their variations. The site, a dramatic bend in the river, offers a natural setting rare for a festival this size. Two days are enough to get your fill of guitars and riverside views, with no need to book far ahead. A still-modest gathering, but loyal to its audience for close to twenty years.
