The great gathering of bandas and fanfares in the streets of the bastide of Mazères
The Festival des Bandas en Basse Ariège is a free and festive musical event that brings together hundreds of musicians from bandas and fanfares in the streets of Mazères each year, a medieval town in Ariège. Organized by the association Bandas en Basse Ariège and the Comité des Fêtes de Mazères, this festival transforms the bastide into a huge open-air stage where brass, percussion, and voices resonate from evening until late at night. Free and open to all, it attracts thousands of spectators who come to share a moment of conviviality and popular celebration in the heart of the Ariège summer.
The Festival des Bandas en Basse Ariège is one of the highlights of the summer in Mazères, a charming medieval bastide in northern Ariège. Created by the association Bandas en Basse Ariège, this festival brings together bandas and fanfare groups from all over southern France each year to joyfully invade the streets, squares, and alleys of the town. For a whole evening, music spreads through every corner of the city, transforming Mazères into a gigantic open-air popular ball.
The 2024 edition, the 18th of its name, brought together 7 bandas and 250 musicians in the streets of Mazères, with a program running from 7 PM to 2 AM. The 2025 edition, for its 19th year, welcomed 7 bandas and 250 musicians again during an evening in June. The festival offers a unique format of musical procession: the bandas circulate in the bastide, stopping at crossroads and squares to offer lively performances. The next morning, a fanfare wake-up call prolongs the celebration, followed by an awards ceremony that rewards the best groups.
Beyond the music, the Festival des Bandas en Basse Ariège is a true popular festival. Refreshment stands and bodegas are set up in the streets of the bastide, offering drinks and food to accompany the evening. The friendly and festive atmosphere attracts thousands of spectators, from families to groups of friends, in a spirit of sharing and joie de vivre typical of southern French festivals. Admission is completely free, making the event accessible to all.
The Festival des Bandas is part of the broader Fêtes de Mazères, which animate the bastide every summer with balls, variety concerts, fireworks, and entertainment for all ages. The association Bandas en Basse Ariège, in collaboration with the town's Comité des Fêtes, works to make this event an unmissable summer appointment in Ariège, celebrating the living tradition of bandas in the Pyrenean foothills.
