Avignon raises the curtain: 12 Provence festivals for July 4-5

By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

From the Festival d'Avignon raising its curtain to Marseille Jazz des Cinq Continents, twelve very real events for the weekend of July 4-5 in Provence.

The weekend of July 4-5, 2026 is a turning point for Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur: the moment the summer season shifts into full gear. The Festival d'Avignon throws open its doors, opera settles into Aix, jazz rings out across Marseille and, from the Riviera beaches to the Luberon villages, every department has its own celebration. This week our heart goes to the curtain-raisers: Avignon and its sprawling OFF turn the city of the Popes into a world capital of the performing arts from Saturday onward. Here are twelve outings, from Roman theatres to pétanque tournaments, to build a weekend to suit you.

Festival d'Avignon: world theatre takes over the Cour d'Honneur

You can't talk about this weekend without starting in Avignon. Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, the Festival d'Avignon opens its 2026 edition on Saturday July 4 and runs until the 25th. In the Vaucluse, the Cour d'Honneur of the Palais des Papes becomes a magical stage for the most ambitious creations in international performing arts, with more than forty indoor shows and directors from around the world. It is one of the great global gatherings of theatre and live arts. For this first weekend, book ahead: the opening programme sets the tone for the entire Avignon summer.

Festival OFF d'Avignon: 1,600 shows across the whole city

Alongside the IN, the Festival OFF d'Avignon also kicks off on July 4 for three weeks. Born in 1966 to host the companies not selected by the Festival IN, it is now the largest performing-arts festival in the world: more than 1,600 shows presented simultaneously in over 130 venues across the city of the Popes. Comedy, circus, dance, young-audience work, new theatre: you drift from venue to venue, guided by flyers and word of mouth. It is the world's laboratory of creation, to be explored without a fixed plan. The opening weekend is the perfect time to take the pulse of the 2026 vintage.

Aix-en-Provence Lyric Art Festival: opera under the stars

An hour away, Aix-en-Provence moves to the rhythm of one of the world's most prestigious opera festivals. Founded in 1948, the Festival International d'Art Lyrique runs from July 2 to 21 and is in full swing this weekend. At the Théâtre de l'Archevêché, the Grand Théâtre de Provence and various heritage venues, it offers exceptional opera productions blending tradition and innovation, led by the greatest conductors and directors. In the Bouches-du-Rhône, it is the rendezvous for demanding music lovers, to be enjoyed in the refined setting of the Aix courtyards and theatres. An open-air opera evening remains one of the finest experiences of the Provençal summer.

Marseille Jazz des Cinq Continents: jazz sets sail

Off to the Phocaean city. Created in 2000, Marseille Jazz des Cinq Continents runs from July 1 to 12 and enlivens the whole weekend in the gardens of the Palais Longchamp, the Centre de la Vieille Charité and the Friche la Belle de Mai. Its international line-up blends jazz, world music, soul, funk and great voices in the city's most emblematic venues. For aficionados and the curious alike, it's a chance to hear world headliners in open-air heritage settings. In Marseille, jazz is lived outdoors, on summer evenings, against the golden stone of Longchamp.

Les Nuits Guitares, Beaulieu-sur-Mer: six strings by the sea

Head to the Alpes-Maritimes for one of the Riviera's loveliest musical events. Founded in 2000, Les Nuits Guitares takes place from July 3 to 5 in the sumptuous Jardin de l'Olivaie, a 6,000 m² olive grove lined with centuries-old trees between the cliff and the marina of Beaulieu-sur-Mer. The festival celebrates the guitar in all its forms — rock, blues, jazz, world music and pop — and has welcomed the world's greatest guitarists. Saturday July 4 and Sunday July 5 close this edition in an exceptional green setting. Ideal for a concert evening almost at the water's edge, a stone's throw from Nice.

Trad'in Festival, Embrun: world music above the Durance

Let's climb up to the Hautes-Alpes. Organised since 2010 by the Kaya association, the Trad'in Festival takes place from July 3 to 5 at the Jardins du Roc, a remarkable site perched 80 metres above the Durance valley, with panoramic mountain views. A festival of contemporary and world music, it offers three evenings of concerts by the Embrun lake. Saturday July 4 and Sunday July 5 round off this summer edition. For anyone holidaying in the southern Alps, it's the festive rendezvous of the weekend, between daytime swimming and concerts at sunset. A gem of the Alpine hinterland.

Les Nuits Flamencas, Aubagne: France's only free flamenco festival

Back to the Bouches-du-Rhône for an Andalusian interlude. Created in 2015 by guitarist Juan Carmona, the Nuits Flamencas of Aubagne are the only free international flamenco festival in France. From July 1 to 5, the Esplanade de Gaulle hosts concerts, dance shows, masterclasses, sevillana lessons, screenings and a full Andalusian village. Sunday July 5 closes this edition built on sharing.

Between the fervour of the palmas and the warmth of the south, it's one of the most distinctive events of the Provençal weekend. One to enjoy with family or friends, without spending a cent.

Châteauvallon-Liberté, Ollioules: dance facing the Mediterranean

In the Var, on the Ollioules hills, the Châteauvallon-Liberté Summer Festival has been turning an open-air amphitheatre into a creative platform for more than six decades. A national stage of the Var, the venue hosts the greatest artists of contemporary dance, theatre, circus, music and digital arts from June 26 to July 28. This weekend, the programme is in full swing facing the Mediterranean, in a breathtaking natural setting. For lovers of demanding live performance, far from the coastal crowds, it's the Var address of the moment. The panorama at dusk alone is worth the trip.

Vaison Festival, Vaison-la-Romaine: popular shows in the Roman theatre

Back to the Vaucluse, at the foot of Mont Ventoux. The Vaison Festival is the summer rendezvous for variety and live entertainment at the Roman Theatre of Vaison-la-Romaine, listed by UNESCO. From June 23 to August 6, it brings together French variety artists, comedians, musicians and singers on the ancient stage in an exceptional archaeological setting. This weekend, the Roman tiers welcome audiences for popular evenings under the stars. Distinct from the Choralies and Vaison Danses, the festival offers a friendly, mainstream programme. A fine way to combine ancient heritage and an open-air concert for an evening.

Soirée Vénitienne, Martigues: nautical parade and fireworks over the Étang de Berre

On Saturday July 4, Martigues lives its great night. The flagship event of the Martigues summer, the Soirée Vénitienne draws tens of thousands of spectators every first Saturday of July around an enchanting nautical parade and a pyromusical show set off above the Étang de Berre. Ranked among the four great traditional festivals of Martigues, this evening turns the "Provençal Venice" into a glowing tableau: decorated boats, music and a final blaze.

It's the weekend's gem for lovers of popular waterside celebrations. Come early to find a good spot along the canals. The crowds turn out every year.

Melon en Fête, Cavaillon: the melon capital celebrates its king fruit

Still in the Vaucluse, Cavaillon honours its famous IGP melon on July 3 and 4. During the Féria du Melon, the Place du Clos and the town centre turn into a great gourmet market: local producers, Cavaillon melon tastings, entertainment for all ages, music and street shows. Admission is free for this authentic, popular festival devoted to the star fruit of Provence. Saturday July 4 is the final day of the festivities.

For a family outing full of flavour, far from the big stages, it's the tasty rendezvous of the weekend in melon country.

Mondial La Marseillaise à Pétanque, Marseille: the world's biggest tournament

We end with a southern institution. Created in 1962, the Mondial La Marseillaise à Pétanque is the most prestigious international pétanque competition. From July 3 to 8, the Parc Borély and some thirty playing areas across the city welcome thousands of teams — men's, women's and mixed — from around the world. The competition is open to all, licensed or not, making it as convivial as it is spectacular. All weekend, the atmosphere is at its peak under the park's pines, between applauded shots and pastis in the shade. An immersion in the most authentic Provençal culture.
