6 lesser-known festivals to discover this 8-10 May 2026 weekend in Maine-et-Loire

From the Cadre Noir in Saumur to a restored organ in a Baugeois village, plus the Mauges region and a Loire-side marathon: six low-profile dates for the 8 May weekend.

The 8 May 2026 long weekend isn't the most hyped slot of the Anjou festival calendar. All the better: it's a chance to explore a less-exposed programme. Cultural seasons, classical village music, intimate theatre, heritage equestrian shows, a sporting event in the UNESCO-listed Loire Valley: the palette is wide.

From Beaupréau-en-Mauges to Cheviré-le-Rouge, here are six leads to cross the département off the beaten track. Who's it for? Mainly curious travellers tired of saturated headline posters.

Loire Marathon — running takes the royal river as backdrop on Sunday 10 May

This is the Sunday outing for runners. The 8th Loire Marathon takes place on Sunday 10 May 2026 in Saumur. The course, a single low-elevation loop, follows the « vieille Levée » paths along the river, with views of Loire castles and vineyards.

Three races: full marathon (42.195 km, 8:30 am start), half marathon (21.100 km, 8:00 am) and a canoe-and-running combined event (12 km canoeing then 17 km running, 9:00 am). Registration around 50 € for the marathon, 30 € for the half. Why go? The combined canoe-running format is unusual enough to be worth the trip, even just as a spectator. See the festival page.

Festival Organza — a restored organ steps out of the shadows in Cheviré-le-Rouge

Here's a festival few people know outside the Baugeois area. Launched in 2025 to mark the inauguration of the restored organ in the village church, the Festival Organza begins its 2026 edition on 10 May. Run by the local Friends of the Organ association, it celebrates early and classical music played on acoustic instruments.

Organ concerts, chamber music, musical encounters: the format stays intimate, inside the village church. The aim is also territorial — using the organ as a driver of cultural revitalisation in a rural area. Full price 15 € per concert, free for under-18s. A pick aimed at sacred-music lovers curious to step beyond the big urban venues. See the festival page.

Cadre Noir Galas — Saumur's high school of equitation takes the stage

Still in Saumur, on the historic Terrefort site, the Cadre Noir Galas have been running since 24 April. Heir to a tradition born in 1815, the Cadre Noir is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. The riders present haute école movements, school jumps and long-rein work in galas choreographed to music.

The season is built around three distinct events: Printemps des Écuyers, Destins Liés and Musicales, running through 18 October. Technically demanding and visually impressive, it speaks to families as well as classical-riding enthusiasts. Online booking, prices vary by seating category. See the festival page.

Les Hivernales du Festival d'Anjou — theatre stretches its winter in Angers

For theatre lovers, Les Hivernales du Festival d'Anjou are nearing their final curtain. Created in 2018, they extend the famous summer Festival d'Anjou season from October to May. The events take place at the Grand-Théâtre in Angers, on Place du Ralliement.

The selection mixes contemporary and classical plays performed by recognised actors. The idea: let Angers audiences enjoy quality theatre programming year-round, alongside the summer open-air festival. The 8 May long weekend falls towards the end of the winter season — a chance to catch the last dates before the break. Variable prices, booking online and at the box office. See the festival page.

Les Z'Éclectiques — the Spring collection brings its rhythms to Chemillé

On the contemporary music side, Les Z'Éclectiques follow their own seasonality. Founded in 1998 and based in Chemillé-en-Anjou since 2002, the festival is split into four annual collections: Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer. The Spring collection, labelled « alternative and trendsetting », takes the May slot.

Powered by nearly 300 volunteers, the festival juggles rock, pop, electro, French chanson and hip-hop at the Théâtre Foirail in Chemillé and various venues across the Mauges region. Who's it for? Mainly 25-40-year-olds curious about emerging scenes, but the lineup stays accessible. Pass Culture accepted, ticketing on Vorg.fr. See the festival page.

Scènes de Pays — the cultural season of the Mauges wraps up in style

Even more discreet but well-rooted: the Scènes de Pays season, run by Mauges Communauté, programmes about fifty shows and a hundred performances between September 2025 and June 2026. It relies on two main venues: the La Loge Cultural Centre in Beaupréau and the Théâtre Foirail in Chemillé.

Theatre, music, dance, comedy, circus, family shows: the range is wide to feed a rural territory. Artist residencies, educational workshops and meetings round out the offer. Subscription from 3 shows or a 10 € card, variable prices. This is the « local cultural life » angle to favour if you're staying in the Mauges that weekend. See the festival page.

To sum up

Six dates flying under the headline radar, sketching a Maine-et-Loire that's heritage-rich, sporty and culturally contemporary. What to take away? A Loire-side marathon on Sunday, an organ stepping out of the shadows in Baugeois, the Cadre Noir in Saumur, theatre on Place du Ralliement in Angers, contemporary music in Chemillé and the all-purpose Mauges season as backdrop.
