The great pop, rock and electro festival of Biarritz
There is no edition scheduled in 2026 for this event. This page remains accessible to archive the history of the manifestation and will be updated if a new edition is announced.
The Big Festival marked Biarritz's cultural history for nearly a decade, from 2008 to 2016. Created to make the seaside resort a major hub for pop, rock, and electro music, this ambitious event successfully attracted international headliners to the Basque Coast and transformed Biarritz into the summer's music capital.
One of the Big Festival's unique features was its spread across three emblematic sites in Biarritz:
Throughout its nine editions, the Big Festival hosted major artists: The Chemical Brothers, Pharrell Williams, Stromae, Placebo, Metronomy, Gesaffelstein, Kavinsky, Mr Oizo, Synapson, The Libertines, and many others. This high-caliber programming helped position Biarritz on the map of major European festivals.
In February 2017, the Biarritz municipality announced it would not renew the festival. Mayor Michel Veunac cited the significant deficit of the last edition and the excessive demands of the Parisian organizers, who requested a doubling of municipal subsidies (130,000 euros the previous year). This decision ended one of the most popular musical events on the Basque Coast.
Despite its interruption, the Big Festival left a lasting mark on Biarritz's cultural life. It demonstrated the city's capacity to host large-scale musical events and paved the way for other festivals like Ocean Fest or Biarritz Hall Music Festival, which continue the city's musical tradition.
The Big Festival has no edition scheduled for 2026. The event has been on hold since 2017: that year's edition was cancelled and never resumed, the last actual edition dating back to 2016.
ℹ️ 2026 Edition cancelled — Big Festival on hold since 2017. No edition is announced for 2026 and no resumption has been communicated by the organizers. The last edition held took place in 2016; the 2017 edition was cancelled by the City of Biarritz due to a lack of agreement on the format and funding.
In Biarritz, the summer music program was taken over from 2018 by a new event called « Biarritz en été », distinct from the Big Festival.
The Big Festival has been dormant since 2017. No editions are currently scheduled. Follow Biarritz's cultural news for any potential relaunch announcements.
