The Carnaval de Bourg-la-Reine: The tradition of the parade on the banks of the Bièvre
Bourg-la-Reine is a town in the Hauts-de-Seine department with around 20,000 inhabitants, located in the Bièvre valley between Sceaux, Fontenay-aux-Roses, and Antony. Formerly a royal commune – its name evokes the passage of French queens – it boasts a rich history and a pleasant living environment, with proximity to the Parc de Sceaux and the Verrières forest.
The Carnaval de Bourg-la-Reine is a festive tradition rooted in the social fabric of the town. Every spring, a costumed parade crosses the main streets of the commune, bringing together children, families, and associations in a joyful and colorful procession. The preparation for the event mobilizes the community for several weeks in advance: costume making in schools and leisure centers, float construction by associations, and rehearsals for brass bands and musical groups.
A participatory parade open to all
The philosophy of the Carnaval de Bourg-la-Reine is one of open participation: everyone can take part in the parade, whether child or adult, long-time resident or newcomer. All you need to do is put on a costume and join the procession at the starting point. This openness gives the carnival a diversity and spontaneity that are its charm. You might see princes and fairies from classic tales, video game characters, fantastic creatures, or creative and humorous representations of current events.
The parade travels along the main arteries of the town to the cheers of spectators lining the sidewalks. Confetti flies, music mixes, children laugh and run. After the parade, a celebration in the central square or a public space extends the carnival atmosphere with musical entertainment, games, and refreshments. King Carnival is sometimes symbolically burned at the end of the festivities, perpetuating the old tradition of exorcising winter to welcome spring.
Bourg-la-Reine, a town of culture and education
Bourg-la-Reine is known for the quality of its educational institutions, including the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional (CRD) of Bourg-la-Reine-Sceaux, which welcomes hundreds of students in music, dance, and theater. This conservatory regularly contributes to the musical animation of the carnival by inviting its students to participate in the event. The carnival is thus both a popular festival and a place for amateur artistic practice, in the fine French tradition of festivals that blend culture and conviviality.
