The Carnaval de Montmorency: Festival and History
The Carnaval de Montmorency takes place in one of the most charming towns in the Val-d'Oise: perched on its promontory above the state forest, Montmorency is a city of art and history whose past is intimately linked to the great families of French nobility and the illustrious Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who stayed there several times in the 18th century.
In this exceptional historical setting, the carnival takes on a special dimension. The cobbled alleys around the Saint-Martin collegiate church and the squares of the old town serve as a backdrop for a festive and colorful parade that brings together the inhabitants of Montmorency and the neighboring valley communes.
A Parade through the Historic Streets
The route of the carnival parade takes advantage of the architectural charm of Montmorency, a town classified as a city of art and history. The costumed participants parade in front of the Saint-Martin Gothic collegiate church, walk along old bourgeois residences, and cross the squares where medieval markets were once held. This contrast between colorful costumes and ancient walls creates a picturesque and warm atmosphere.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the Festival
Montmorency proudly keeps the memory of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who lived in the town from 1757 to 1762 and wrote his major works there — La Nouvelle Héloïse, Du Contrat Social, Émile. The Maison Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a museum dedicated to the philosopher, is one of the town's tourist attractions. Even though Rousseau himself was rather wary of worldly festivals, the Montmorency carnival perpetuates the festive and popular spirit that he celebrated in his writings.
A Family-Friendly and Free Event
True to its popular vocation, the Carnaval de Montmorency is entirely free. Families, children, and elders gather to share this moment of conviviality that punctuates the town's festival calendar. Activities for the youngest — face painting, games, candy distribution — help make this carnival a multigenerational event.
