About Saubusse Carnival

The Saubusse Carnival is a must-attend festive event in the south of the Landes, perpetuating a century-old tradition in this charming village on the banks of the Adour. Organized every March by the Amicale Sibusate, this carnival is distinguished by its flower parade made up of floats decorated with 'coquillettes', these small rounded plastic flowers that are the unique signature of this event. The parade crosses the village to the sound of bandas, followed by the traditional judgment of Zan Pantzar, a legendary figure held responsible for all the ills of the past year.

The Saubusse Carnival: a century-old tradition at the gates of Dax

Every year in March, the village of Saubusse, nestled on the banks of the Adour in the south of the Landes, comes alive to the rhythm of its traditional carnival. This event, supported by the Amicale Sibusate for over a century, brings together more than 1,000 people in a single day for a colorful popular festival.

The 'coquillettes': the carnival's unique signature

What sets the Saubusse Carnival apart from all other Landes carnivals are the famous 'coquillettes'. These are not pasta, but small rounded plastic flowers meticulously crafted by volunteers for weeks to decorate the parade floats. These 'coquillettes' give the floats their characteristic floral and colorful appearance, making this decorative technique the true hallmark of the Sibusate carnival.

The parade: the heart of the carnival

The highlight of the carnival is the grand flower parade, a procession of decorated floats that winds through the village streets. The parade starts from the church, crosses the town center, and follows the path of the Barthes before returning to the town hall square. The floats, the result of weeks of volunteer work, compete in creativity and originality, accompanied by costumed groups and bandas providing the musical atmosphere.

The judgment of Zan Pantzar

The traditional climax of the carnival, the judgment of Zan Pantzar (or San Pansar), is a carnival ritual rooted in Gascon culture. This straw figure, held responsible for all the ills and misfortunes of the past year, is judged in the public square in a burlesque trial before being condemned and burned, symbolizing renewal and purification as spring approaches.

Remarkable volunteer work

The preparation of the carnival mobilizes the volunteers of the Amicale Sibusate for several weeks. In the communal hangars, volunteers build the float structures, craft the 'coquillettes', and design the decorations in a friendly atmosphere that is an integral part of the festival. This collective work illustrates the strength of social bonds in the Landes villages.

Saubusse: a spa and festive village

Saubusse is also known for its thermal waters and its preserved natural setting along the Adour. The carnival is part of a dynamic associative life that animates the village throughout the year, blending Gascon traditions and Landes conviviality.
