A Gem of 18th-Century French Organ Building

The Organ Concerts at the Abbey Church of Mouzon are among the most remarkable musical events in the Ardennes. Organized every summer by the association Présence de l'Abbatiale, these recitals showcase the grand organ by Christophe Moucherel, a masterpiece of 18th-century French organ building. Commissioned in 1723 and completed in May 1725, this monumental instrument in the French classical style has 4 manual keyboards, a pedalboard, and 44 stops, making it one of the most important organs in the Grand Est region.

The Abbey Church of Notre-Dame, an Exceptional Gothic Setting

The Abbey Church of Notre-Dame de Mouzon, built in the 13th century, is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Formerly the church of the Benedictine abbey, it impresses with its majestic proportions, soaring nave, and the quality of its acoustics. It is in this grand setting that the Moucherel grand organ resonates, its carved case, a true work of art, standing proudly in the tribune above the main entrance. The fusion of Gothic architecture and organ music creates a unique sensory experience for music lovers and heritage enthusiasts.

An Exemplary Restoration

After centuries of modifications and deterioration, the grand organ of Mouzon underwent a historic restoration completed in 1991 by the Italian organ builder Barthélemy Formentelli. This restoration, carried out with respect for Moucherel's original craftsmanship, restored the instrument to its original sound, with its characteristic timbres of French classicism: brilliant full-mixtures, warm foundations, powerful reeds, and colorful mutations. The organ is now maintained by Michel Formentelli, the restorer's son, ensuring the longevity of this exemplary restoration.

Renowned Organists at the Console

Each season, the association Présence de l'Abbatiale invites organists of national and international renown to perform on the grand organ of Mouzon. The repertoire performed covers the entire literature for organ, with a preference for works from the French Baroque (Couperin, Grigny, Du Mage, Marchand, Balbastre) and Johann Sebastian Bach, which sound with remarkable authenticity on this period instrument. The concerts take place on Sunday afternoons, usually at 6 PM, from July to September.

The Association Présence de l'Abbatiale

Founded in 1980, the association Présence de l'Abbatiale has been working for over four decades to restore, promote, and animate the Abbey Church of Notre-Dame de Mouzon musically. It is thanks to its determined efforts that the restoration of the Moucherel grand organ could be successfully completed. The association also organizes guided tours of the instrument and participates in the European Heritage Days. Admission to the concerts is free, with a voluntary contribution to cover costs, in keeping with the spirit of sharing and accessibility that drives this cultural initiative.
