Croq' les mots, marmot ! : books for little ones

Since 2006, the Croq' les mots, marmot ! festival has pursued a unique ambition: to introduce the pleasure of books and reading to toddlers aged 0 to 6. This cultural project, unique in Haute Mayenne, was born from the collaboration between librarians, cultural agents, and early childhood professionals from the four inter-municipal communities in the region.

A benchmark biennial event

Organized every two years, the festival revolves around a three-day book fair, which is the highlight of the event. One day is reserved for school groups and early childhood care facilities, while the weekend is open to the general public. Families can find a giant bookstore, meet renowned authors and illustrators, enjoy read-aloud sessions, shows, exhibitions, and creative workshops tailored for the youngest attendees.

Prestigious patrons

Each edition invites a godfather and godmother from the world of children's illustration and literature. In 2025, artist and illustrator Albertine and author Germano Zullo were the guests of honor for the 9th edition, around the theme “The art of meeting, the art of relating”. These artists visit schools and facilities in the region before the fair, creating a lasting connection with children and professionals.

A reach across the territory

Beyond the book fair, Croq' les mots, marmot ! extends its activities throughout Haute Mayenne: a professional day, teacher training, a touring show in the region's towns, traveling exhibitions, and participatory projects with families. The festival is supported by Le Kiosque, the cultural action center of Mayenne Communauté, and benefits from the support of the CAF de la Mayenne, the Department, and the Pays de la Loire Region.

A free and accessible event

True to its mission of popular education, the festival is entirely free and open to all. It provides a special moment for sharing around language, words, images, and music, in an environment designed for young children and their caregivers.
