The Fest Noz: a living Breton tradition in Mayenne

The fest-noz (literally "night festival" in Breton) is a festive tradition born in Lower Brittany in the 1950s, inspired by the peasant gatherings that accompanied collective work in the fields. Listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2012, this tradition has spread widely beyond the borders of historic Brittany.

An annual event in Argentré

For several years, the Association Animation Argentré has organized a Fest Noz at the Escapade hall in October. The event has become an anticipated gathering for lovers of Breton culture in southern Mayenne and neighboring departments. The 5th edition confirmed the anchoring of this tradition in the cultural life of Argentré.

Breton music and dance

Each edition hosts three groups of traditional Breton music who take turns throughout the evening. Among the artists who have participated in the fest-noz: Chaberjack, the Duo Blain-Leyzour, the Duo Mayic, and the Duo d'Aviau, specializing in dance music from Mayenne and Haute-Bretagne. The musicians — pipers, accordionists, violinists, and singers — perform the repertoire of Breton dances: an dro, hanter dro, gavotte, rond de Saint-Vincent, and many others.

A family event

The Fest Noz d'Argentré stands out for its family-friendly nature. A free babysitting service is offered to allow parents to fully enjoy the evening. Prices are intentionally accessible (5 to 7 euros) and the event is open to everyone, from experienced dancers to beginners curious to discover Breton dances.
