The grand Saint-Nicolas celebration in the prefecture of Meuse
The Saint-Nicolas Parade of Bar-le-Duc is one of the highlights of the festive life in the prefecture of Meuse. Every first Saturday of December, the city celebrates its patron saint of Lorraine with a grand, magical parade of decorated floats, giants, musicians, and costumed participants parading through the illuminated streets of the city center. The procession ends in front of the Town Hall where Saint-Nicolas gives a speech and distributes treats to children. The evening concludes with a fireworks display fired in the Town Hall park, illuminating the sky of Bar-le-Duc.
Since the end of the 15th century, Saint-Nicolas has been celebrated as the patron saint of Lorraine. In Bar-le-Duc, as in other cities in Eastern France, December 6th is a significant date on the festive calendar. The Saint-Nicolas celebration is an event deeply rooted in Lorraine tradition, celebrated with fervor and enthusiasm by the people of Bar-le-Duc.
The heart of the celebration is the grand parade that crosses the city center of Bar-le-Duc starting at 5 PM. The procession consists of decorated and illuminated floats, spectacular giants, musicians, and costumed participants in magical attire. Associations, schools, and performance groups participate in this colorful and joyful parade that attracts thousands of spectators along the route.
Upon the procession's arrival in front of the Town Hall, Saint-Nicolas takes the floor and addresses the well-behaved children of Bar-le-Duc. Accompanied by the formidable Père Fouettard (Father Whipper), he distributes treats and sweets to the deserving children of Bar-le-Duc. This moment of sharing and tradition is the highlight of the celebration, eagerly awaited by families.
The evening concludes with a fireworks display fired in the Town Hall park, offering a grand and magical finale. The fireworks illuminate the sky of Bar-le-Duc and mark the official launch of the Christmas festivities in the ducal city.
Around the parade, the city offers numerous festive activities: Christmas market, children's workshops, street performances, and illuminations. The city center transforms into a true festive venue, where conviviality and Christmas magic combine to offer an unforgettable experience to all visitors.
The Saint-Nicolas celebration in Bar-le-Duc perpetuates a centuries-old tradition that unites generations. Supported by the City of Bar-le-Duc, it mobilizes many local volunteers and associations, demonstrating the cultural vitality and community spirit of the Meuse prefecture.
