The Festival RenaissanceS: Street Arts at the Heart of Bar-le-Duc's Heritage

Since 1996, the Festival RenaissanceS has transformed the city of Bar-le-Duc into a vast open-air stage every summer. Born from the desire to showcase the Renaissance district of the Ville Haute, one of France's most remarkable urban ensembles with its 16th-century private mansions, sculpted pediments, and fluted pilasters, the festival has become over the years an essential cultural event in the Grand Est region and the Meuse department.

A Rich Program Mixing Street Arts and Music

The Festival RenaissanceS is distinguished by its dual artistic identity:

  • Street Arts: street theater, circus, dance, parades, installations, participatory performances, and burlesque shows. Nearly 40 French and international companies perform in the streets, squares, and courtyards of the city, offering over 200 performances over three days.
  • Music: a varied musical program with a particular focus on ancient and baroque music, resonating with the city's Renaissance heritage. The music stage, located on Place des Minimes, also features concerts by emerging and established artists in partnership with the Cité musicale-Metz.

A Festival Rooted in its Territory

RenaissanceS is much more than just a festival of performances: it is an event that celebrates the heritage identity of Bar-le-Duc. The Ville Haute district, labeled a Protected Sector and classified as a City of Art and History, offers an exceptional setting for the performances. Place Saint-Pierre, Rue des Ducs de Bar, the Saint-Étienne church housing the famous Transi by Ligier Richier: each location becomes a stage where heritage dialogues with contemporary creation.

The festival also offers an artisanal and gastronomic market, highlighting local know-how and products from the Meuse region. A family area with participatory workshops and shows for young audiences completes the program.

Top-Tier Artistic Partnerships

The festival's artistic program is developed in close collaboration with the acb Scène nationale de Bar-le-Duc for street arts, and with the Cité musicale-Metz for the musical component. These partnerships ensure a high level of artistic quality and openness to the most innovative creations of the contemporary scene.

A Unifying Event

With approximately 43,000 spectators welcomed each year, the Festival RenaissanceS fully contributes to the cultural and tourist influence of Bar-le-Duc and the Meuse department. The event brings together a wide audience: families, street art enthusiasts, music lovers, tourists, and local residents. The spirit of the festival is based on conviviality, sharing, and discovery, with a large part of the program accessible for free in the city streets.
