L'Été du Grand Jardin: Open-air Culture in a Renaissance Gem

Since 2020, the Château du Grand Jardin in Joinville has opened its doors every summer for a series of festive and cultural events called L'Été du Grand Jardin. This 16th-century pleasure pavilion, built between 1533 and 1546 by Claude de Lorraine, the first Duke of Guise, offers a unique heritage setting for musical evenings, live performances, and convivial outdoor moments.

Thursday Aperitifs

Every Thursday during the summer, from 6 PM to 10 PM, the castle gardens transform into a festive meeting place. The Thursday Aperitifs offer:

  • Open-air concerts with various musical groups
  • Food and drink services provided by local caterers
  • An enchanting setting in the heart of the Renaissance gardens classified as Remarkable Gardens
  • Dancing evenings under the stars in the castle park

The Thursday aperitifs take place on eight dates during July and August, offering locals and visitors the chance to enjoy a friendly moment in a historic location.

Sunday Performances

In partnership with the association Arts Vivants 52, L'Été du Grand Jardin schedules contemporary circus and street arts performances on Sunday afternoons at 5 PM in the castle park. These carefully selected open-air shows feature trapeze, aerial silks, balancing acts, Chinese poles, and acrobatic lifts to amaze both young and old.

A Program for All Audiences

The performances are designed to bring families and all ages together. The artistic quality of the invited companies and the majestic setting of the castle park create a magical atmosphere that delights a loyal audience and new spectators each year.

An Exceptional Heritage Setting

The Château du Grand Jardin, classified as a Historic Monument since 1925, is a jewel of Renaissance architecture in Champagne. Its four-hectare garden, classified as a Remarkable Garden, offers a lush green setting that is ideally suited for summer performances and events. Owned by the Conseil départemental de la Haute-Marne, the castle is managed by the Agence d'Attractivité de la Haute-Marne, which ensures its cultural programming throughout the season.

An Event Rooted in the Territory

L'Été du Grand Jardin is part of the cultural dynamic of Joinville, a characterful Renaissance town, and contributes to the tourist appeal of Haute-Marne. The event brings together local stakeholders, caterers, artists, and the public in a spirit of sharing and discovery of the Haute-Marne heritage.
