The Great Halloween Coven at Fort du Cognelot
Every last weekend of October, the Fort du Cognelot — also known as Fort Vercingétorix —, a military structure built in 1877 on the heights of Chalindrey, transforms into a true den of fantastic creatures. The fort's fifteen vaulted rooms host monstrous decorations, exhibitors, and entertainment in a unique atmosphere blending historical heritage and the Halloween universe.
The Witches' Festival draws its inspiration from the folklore of Haute-Marne. According to legend, the devil, nicknamed Foulletot, haunted the Cognelot hill dressed in red, presiding over dark covens. In 1598, a resident of Chalindrey, Clément Rabiet, was found guilty of witchcraft and executed after claiming to have met the devil. This famous trial earned Chalindrey the nickname "Land of Sorcerers" and inspired the creation of the festival in 1999.
Over 70 exhibitors set up in the fort's rooms to offer their artisanal creations: costume jewelry, decorative objects, handmade clothing, candles, decorative potions, and local products. Visitors can taste the famous witch's bread baked in a wood-fired oven, as well as sweet and savory treats prepared on-site.
The entertainment program delights all generations. Children enjoy face painting stands, pebble painting workshops, balloon sculpting, making fantastic animals with natural elements, and Halloween crafts. The bravest venture into the tunnel of horror or participate in escape games and murder mysteries designed specifically for the event.
Theater companies animate the fort throughout the weekend. The troupe Ça change un peu and the actor Jérôme Hudeley bring the legend of Foulletot back to life through immersive performances combining theater, divination, magic, and physical challenges. The election of Miss Witch and the Witches' Ball on Saturday evening add a festive and quirky touch to the event.
Organized by the association L'Effort du Cognelot in partnership with the Communauté de Communes des Savoir-Faire and the association Shazam, the Witches' Festival is a collective project that mobilizes volunteers and local stakeholders. Since its creation, it has contributed to the tourist appeal of Chalindrey and the Langrois region, showcasing unique military heritage while celebrating imagination and popular traditions.
The Witches' Festival returns for its 28th edition at Fort du Cognelot on October 24th and 25th, 2026. As every year, the military fort transforms into a vast lair of fantastic creatures to celebrate Halloween and local folklore. A craft market, shows, family entertainment, and immersive trails are on the program for this bewitched weekend in Haute-Marne.
Fort du Cognelot is located on the heights of Chalindrey, in Haute-Marne, 20 km north of Langres and 70 km south of Chaumont.
The festival takes place every year on the last weekend of October, around Halloween.
Admission is charged for adults:
Food stalls are available on site: witch's bread baked in a wood-fired oven, special witch's menu on Saturday evening, crepes, hot drinks, and other treats. Food trucks complement the catering options.
