The abbey's orchards
The three orchards at the Abbaye d’Auberive are planted within a 6.5-hectare enclosed park and contain apple, pear, and plum trees. More than fifty varieties are spread across these three orchards, two of which are open to the public. Some are now rare, such as the Calville Aromatique, Codlin Hollandais, Luckert, and the Auberive apple. The abbey works with the Croqueurs de pommes de Sud-Champagne association, founded in 1991, to preserve existing varieties by propagating them and to rediscover endemic varieties from the southern Haute-Marne region. The apple juice sold at the abbey comes from this harvest, which begins in September and is done by hand.
The October 13, 2024 edition
The only confirmed edition took place on Sunday, October 13, 2024, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The local producers' and artisans' market was open all day, featuring presentations and tastings of local apple and pear varieties, an apple juice-making workshop, fruit identification for visitors, and food and drink stalls. At 11:00 am, the Croqueurs de pommes led a public tour of the orchards. At 2:00 pm, Romaric Leconte from the Conservatoire d’espaces naturels de Champagne-Ardenne gave a lecture on pollinating insects. At 3:00 pm, Jean-Pierre Kohli from the Croqueurs de pommes spoke about local fruit heritage and the origins of fruit varieties. At 4:00 pm, the day concluded with a Q&A session on orchard management and maintenance.
A report in the daily newspaper Le Journal de la Haute-Marne listed the exhibitors present that year: the Nature Haute-Marne association with their nesting boxes, Boukou with their goat milk soaps, potter Sarah Guenin, Alexandre Andriot from Esnoms-au-Val with his apple-based products, and the Parc national de forêts with an exhibition on roof stones. Hundreds of apple and pear varieties were on display, and Gérard Prolonge, a member of the Croqueurs de pommes, provided commentary on the history of the fruit varieties.
