One of the oldest fairs in France, for over 870 years in Langres
The Foire de la Sainte-Catherine is one of the oldest fairs in France, organized annually in Langres in Haute-Marne since the 12th century. Every last Sunday of November, over 200 exhibitors take over the streets of the historic center of this fortified city between Champagne and Burgundy. Over more than 3,000 meters of strolling, visitors and families discover local products, Langres AOP cheese, mulled wine, toys, and Christmas gifts in a friendly atmosphere. This event attracts thousands of visitors and perpetuates a tradition nearly nine centuries old.
The Foire de la Sainte-Catherine is a major historical event in the city of Langres, in Haute-Marne. Organized every last Sunday of November around Saint Catherine's Day (November 25th), this fair is one of the oldest in France, with a history dating back to the 12th century. In 2024, it was the 871st edition that took place, demonstrating remarkable continuity through the centuries.
On Saint Catherine's Day, the streets of the historic center of Langres transform into a huge open-air market. More than 200 exhibitors — traveling merchants, artisans, and local producers — set up over 3,000 meters of walking space in the heart of the old town. Visitors stroll along the ramparts and through the medieval alleys of this city of art and history, encircled by 3.5 kilometers of fortifications punctuated by seven majestic towers.
The Foire de la Sainte-Catherine is a must-visit event for lovers of local products from Haute-Marne and regional specialties:
Beyond the market, the Foire de la Sainte-Catherine offers a varied program of activities that delights families:
Organized by the City of Langres, the Foire de la Sainte-Catherine is more than just a market: it is an identity event for the people of Langres and Haute-Marne. It traditionally marks the start of the end-of-year holiday season and is an economic driver for local commerce. The fair also contributes to the touristic appeal of Langres, whose exceptional medieval heritage — Saint-Mammès Cathedral, Renaissance houses, fortified towers — provides a unique setting for this centuries-old event.
