The Foire de la Sainte-Catherine: nearly nine centuries of tradition in Langres

The Foire de la Sainte-Catherine is a major historical event in the city of Langres, in Haute-Marne. Organized every last Sunday of November around Saint Catherine's Day (November 25th), this fair is one of the oldest in France, with a history dating back to the 12th century. In 2024, it was the 871st edition that took place, demonstrating remarkable continuity through the centuries.

A giant market in an exceptional fortified city

On Saint Catherine's Day, the streets of the historic center of Langres transform into a huge open-air market. More than 200 exhibitors — traveling merchants, artisans, and local producers — set up over 3,000 meters of walking space in the heart of the old town. Visitors stroll along the ramparts and through the medieval alleys of this city of art and history, encircled by 3.5 kilometers of fortifications punctuated by seven majestic towers.

Local products and gift ideas

The Foire de la Sainte-Catherine is a must-visit event for lovers of local products from Haute-Marne and regional specialties:

  • Langres AOP cheese: the famous soft cheese with a washed rind, recognizable by its hollowed-out shape like a fountain
  • Charcuterie, honey, and jams from local producers
  • Mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and seasonal treats
  • Clothing, accessories, and fashion items
  • Toys and Christmas gifts for young and old
  • Local crafts: basketry, pottery, jewelry, and original creations

Activities and festivities for everyone

Beyond the market, the Foire de la Sainte-Catherine offers a varied program of activities that delights families:

  • Majorette parades in the streets of the center
  • Trampoline and rides for children
  • Traditional ice rink set up for the occasion
  • Musical entertainment and street performances
  • Downtown shops open for the occasion, offering special deals

Strong territorial roots

Organized by the City of Langres, the Foire de la Sainte-Catherine is more than just a market: it is an identity event for the people of Langres and Haute-Marne. It traditionally marks the start of the end-of-year holiday season and is an economic driver for local commerce. The fair also contributes to the touristic appeal of Langres, whose exceptional medieval heritage — Saint-Mammès Cathedral, Renaissance houses, fortified towers — provides a unique setting for this centuries-old event.

Between Champagne and Burgundy

Langres occupies a privileged geographical position, on the border between Champagne and Burgundy. This crossroads of terroirs is reflected in the diversity of products offered at the fair, blending Champagne and Burgundy flavors. The city is also an ideal starting point for discovering the four surrounding lakes and the remarkable landscapes of southern Haute-Marne.
