The grand magical parade of Saint-Nicolas in the streets of Verdun
The Saint-Nicolas Parade of Verdun is one of the most popular events in the Meuse region. Every first weekend of December, a large procession of illuminated floats, musicians, and costumed participants parades through the streets of the city center. Upon arrival at the Quai de Londres, the mayor hands over the keys of the city to Saint-Nicolas. A fireworks display concludes this magical evening, which draws thousands of spectators.
Since the end of the 15th century, Saint-Nicolas has been celebrated as the patron saint of Lorraine. In Verdun, as in many cities in Eastern France, the first weekend of December is an occasion to perpetuate this ancestral tradition through a grand popular parade that brings together the entire Verdun community.
The parade starts from the Porte Saint-Paul and follows a festive route through the city center: rue Saint-Paul, rue Mazel, place Foch, leading to the Quai de Londres. The procession consists of illuminated and decorated floats, giants, musicians, and costumed participants representing magical characters. Many Verdun associations participate in the preparation and animation of the parade, making this event a true collective project.
The highlight of the evening is the symbolic handing over of the city keys to Saint-Nicolas by the mayor of Verdun, on the Quai de Londres. This traditional ritual is followed by the distribution of treats to well-behaved children by Saint-Nicolas, accompanied of course by his sidekick, Père Fouettard. Saint-Nicolas's speech and the distribution of sweets are eagerly awaited moments by the youngest.
The evening concludes with a fireworks display launched from the Quai de Londres, illuminating the Verdun sky and the Meuse in a grand finale. This fireworks display, the true climax of the evening, offers a magical spectacle that delights young and old and officially marks the beginning of the Christmas festivities in Verdun.
The Saint-Nicolas Parade of Verdun is more than just a procession: it is a moment of sharing and conviviality that brings the entire city together. Thousands of spectators line the route to admire the floats and entertainment. Downtown businesses participate in the celebration by decorating their windows and offering special activities. The event contributes to the dynamism of the Christmas Village held simultaneously in the city center.
Each year, the Communauté d'Agglomération du Grand Verdun and the City of Verdun renew the event by offering new entertainment and new floats, while preserving the traditional spirit of the celebration. The parade has thus become an unmissable event on the Meuse festive calendar.
The procession starts from the Porte Saint-Paul and follows this route: rue Saint-Paul, rue Mazel, place Foch, then Quai de Londres. It is recommended to position yourself along the route at least 30 minutes before the parade starts to have good visibility.
Typical evening program: 5:00 PM departure of the procession from Porte Saint-Paul. 6:30 PM arrival at Quai de Londres, handing over of the city keys to Saint-Nicolas, speech, and distribution of treats to children. 7:00 PM fireworks display on the Quai de Londres.
Completely free event and open to all. No reservation required.
As the event takes place outdoors in early December, it is essential to bring very warm clothing: coats, hats, gloves, and scarves. For children, also bring blankets. The event attracts several thousand people: remain vigilant with children in the crowd. Safety barriers are installed along the route.
