The tradition of Saint-Nicolas in Lorraine

Since the end of the 15th century, Saint-Nicolas has been celebrated as the patron saint of Lorraine. In Verdun, as in many cities in Eastern France, the first weekend of December is an occasion to perpetuate this ancestral tradition through a grand popular parade that brings together the entire Verdun community.

A magical procession through the streets of Verdun

The parade starts from the Porte Saint-Paul and follows a festive route through the city center: rue Saint-Paul, rue Mazel, place Foch, leading to the Quai de Londres. The procession consists of illuminated and decorated floats, giants, musicians, and costumed participants representing magical characters. Many Verdun associations participate in the preparation and animation of the parade, making this event a true collective project.

The handing over of the city keys

The highlight of the evening is the symbolic handing over of the city keys to Saint-Nicolas by the mayor of Verdun, on the Quai de Londres. This traditional ritual is followed by the distribution of treats to well-behaved children by Saint-Nicolas, accompanied of course by his sidekick, Père Fouettard. Saint-Nicolas's speech and the distribution of sweets are eagerly awaited moments by the youngest.

A pyrotechnic finale

The evening concludes with a fireworks display launched from the Quai de Londres, illuminating the Verdun sky and the Meuse in a grand finale. This fireworks display, the true climax of the evening, offers a magical spectacle that delights young and old and officially marks the beginning of the Christmas festivities in Verdun.

A unifying event

The Saint-Nicolas Parade of Verdun is more than just a procession: it is a moment of sharing and conviviality that brings the entire city together. Thousands of spectators line the route to admire the floats and entertainment. Downtown businesses participate in the celebration by decorating their windows and offering special activities. The event contributes to the dynamism of the Christmas Village held simultaneously in the city center.

A living tradition

Each year, the Communauté d'Agglomération du Grand Verdun and the City of Verdun renew the event by offering new entertainment and new floats, while preserving the traditional spirit of the celebration. The parade has thus become an unmissable event on the Meuse festive calendar.
