The International Composition Encounters: a festival of musical creation

The International Composition Encounters of Cergy-Pontoise are organized by the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional (CRR) de Cergy-Pontoise, one of the most important music education institutions in Île-de-France. This unique festival in the regional music scene is entirely dedicated to contemporary musical creation and composition.

For several days, renowned national and international composers gather in Cergy to present their works, engage with the public, and pass on their expertise to the new generation of composers. The concerts feature world premieres or recent works in ensembles ranging from chamber music to symphony orchestras, including electroacoustic music and mixed forms.

A place for exchange between composers and performers

One of the specificities of the Encounters is to foster dialogue between composers and performers. Musicians from the CRR and invited ensembles work directly with the present composers in a co-creation process that enriches both the works and musical practices. These collaborations result in rehearsals open to the public, offering a rare glimpse into the musical creation process.

Master-classes and pedagogy

The Encounters also have a strong educational mission. Master-classes led by international composers are offered to composition students from the CRR and other music institutions. These intensive working sessions provide young composers with access to rare expertise and allow them to present their own works to a jury of professionals.

Electroacoustic music in the spotlight

A special place is given to electroacoustic music and new musical technologies. The CRR's electroacoustic composition studio hosts working sessions and presentations of works combining acoustic instruments and electronic processing, demonstrating the vitality of this form of contemporary musical expression.

Accessibility and democratization

Despite its roots in scholarly music, the International Composition Encounters strive to make contemporary music accessible to the widest possible audience. Introductions to concerts, pre-concert explanations, and meetings with artists allow the non-specialist public to approach this music without barriers.
