Nuit des Musées Val-d'Oise: Collections Come Alive at Night
The Nuit des Musées in Val-d'Oise is the local version of a national cultural event coordinated by the Ministry of Culture, which invites thousands of museums every third Saturday in May to open their doors for free until midnight, or even all night. In Val-d'Oise, this event takes on a special dimension due to the richness and uniqueness of the department's museums.
The collections of Val-d'Oise cover a wide range of fields:
- The Musée national de la Renaissance at the Château d'Écouen, one of the most beautiful 16th-century castles in France, housing a unique collection of tapestries, enamels, earthenware, and Renaissance paintings.
- The Musée Daubigny in Auvers-sur-Oise, dedicated to the landscape painter Charles-François Daubigny, a precursor of Impressionism.
- The Maison Van Gogh and the Auberge Ravoux in Auvers-sur-Oise, where the Dutch painter spent his last weeks and created over 70 paintings.
- The Departmental Archaeological Museum in Guiry-en-Vexin, which traces 10,000 years of history in the region.
- Local museums and ecomuseums in many towns in the department.
Unique Evening Animations
The Nuit des Musées is not just a late opening: it is an evening of cultural festivities designed specifically for this nocturnal format. The museums of Val-d'Oise compete in inventiveness to offer candlelit guided tours, artistic performances related to their collections, video screenings, concerts in the exhibition halls, and activities for children.
A Free Event for Everyone
In the spirit of the Nuit des Musées, admission to participating museums is free on the evening of the event. This free access is an invitation to all residents of Val-d'Oise, especially those who do not usually visit museums, to discover the cultural riches of their territory.
An Impressionist Territory
Val-d'Oise is inseparable from the history of Impressionism. Auvers-sur-Oise, where Van Gogh and Daubigny died, is a must-visit for any Impressionist art lover. Pontoise was Pissarro's residence, and many painters from Barbizon and the École de la Bièvre frequented the Val-d'Oise landscapes. The Nuit des Musées is an opportunity to immerse yourself in this unique artistic history.
