Heritage Days Loire — edition 2026

In the Loire department, 111 sites are participating in the 43rd European Heritage Days on Saturday, September 19th, and Sunday, September 20th, 2026. By mid-August, 202 events were already listed on the Ministry of Culture's portal, including 60 in Saint-Étienne. Twelve of these will welcome the public starting Friday, September 18th, for the "Levez les yeux !" school outreach day. This year's edition features two themes: "Heritage of Photography," marking the bicentenary of photography, and "Heritage in Peril: Revive, Resist, Reimagine," the chosen European theme.

2026 Edition in the Loire

The 43rd European Heritage Days will take place on September 19th and 20th, 2026. The Ministry of Culture has selected two themes: "Heritage of Photography," echoing the 200th anniversary of photography, and the European theme "Heritage in Peril: Revive, Resist, Reimagine." Friday, September 18th, is dedicated to school groups through the "Levez les yeux !" operation, conducted in partnership with the Ministry of National Education; a dozen sites in the Loire will also open their doors to the general public on that day.

111 Sites, 202 Events

As of August 16th, 2026, the official portal lists 111 participating sites in the Loire with 202 events: 12 on Friday, 162 on Saturday, and 149 on Sunday. Saint-Étienne hosts 60 of these, with the remainder spread across some forty municipalities, from Roanne to the Pilat.

Both themes are reflected in the local programming. The Musée d'art et d'industrie in Saint-Étienne is dedicating twenty-one events to its new "Bicycle, Engine of Innovation" exhibition, including a dual-narrative tour, "A Bicycle, A Photo," which contrasts the displayed machines with the images documenting them. The Château de Bouthéon in Andrézieux-Bouthéon is hosting "Wild Powers," an exhibition of wildlife photography by Thierry Chevrier under the park's hall. The MAMC+ in Saint-Priest-en-Jarez has built an entire tour around the three verbs of the European theme. In Firminy, the Site Le Corbusier celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Maison de la Culture's UNESCO World Heritage inscription and the 20th anniversary of the completion of the Saint-Pierre church.

Industrial sites are widely accessible: the SBS forge in Boën-sur-Lignon, the former La Vapeur textile factory in Saint-Paul-en-Jarez, the Usine à couleurs in Saint-Chamond housed in the former Gillet dye works, the Pré du Gourd Marin shaft in Rive-de-Gier, the Roannais wastewater treatment plant, and the Renaison drinking water plant. Three events in Andrézieux-Bouthéon trace the history of the first railway line in continental Europe, opened in 1827 between Saint-Étienne and Andrézieux.

The complete schedule, site by site, is published at journeesdupatrimoine.culture.gouv.fr.

A national event across the Loire department

Created in 1984 by the Ministry of Culture, the European Heritage Days constitute the largest participatory cultural event in France. In the Loire department, this event takes on a particular dimension thanks to the richness and diversity of the local heritage: industrial architecture, castles of Forez, medieval religious buildings, museums of national importance, and remarkable natural sites.

Each year, a national theme unifies the activities offered throughout the territory. In 2025, the theme “Architectural Heritage” highlighted the built wealth of Saint-Étienne and the Loire, while the 2026 edition is placed under the dual theme “Photography Heritage” — echoing the bicentenary of photography, which celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2026 — and “Heritage in Peril: Revive, Resist, Reimagine”, a theme adopted at the European level.

Saint-Étienne, City of Art and History

Awarded the “City of Art and History” label, Saint-Étienne offers an exceptional heritage journey during these days. Visitors can discover:

  • The 41 Historic Monuments in the city center during guided tours or treasure hunts
  • The Municipal Archives, usually closed to the public, where archivists reveal the richness of preserved documents tracing the history of the city and its metropolis
  • The Museum of Art and Industry, a unique testimony to the city's past in arms manufacturing, ribbon making, and cycling
  • The Mining Museum - Couriot Pit, classified as a Historic Monument, which recounts the Stéphanoise mining epic
  • The MAMC+, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Saint-Étienne Métropole, one of the most important in France
  • The Cité du design (City of Design), located on the site of the former Arms Manufacture, a symbol of the city's industrial reconversion

Activities for all audiences

The Heritage Days in the Loire offer a varied program accessible to all:

  • Thematic guided tours of the historic city center, discovering Art Deco architecture, covered passages, and inner courtyards
  • Storytelling tours for children (4-6 years old): through an epic tale, the youngest discover the medieval town of Saint-Étienne and meet the Furan
  • Family treasure hunts (8-12 years old) to explore the Historic Monuments of the city center in a fun way
  • Walks through the archives: a privileged moment of exchange with archivists on the history of Saint-Étienne
  • Exceptional openings of sites usually closed to the public: administrative buildings, artists' studios, places of worship

Beyond Saint-Étienne: the entire department celebrates its heritage

The Heritage Days extend throughout the entire Loire department. The castles of Forez, the Romanesque churches of Roannais, the charming villages of Pilat, and remarkable natural sites also open their doors. From Montbrison to Roanne, from Charlieu to Saint-Bonnet-le-Château, hundreds of sites participate in this unifying event.

Admission is free at the vast majority of sites, but some visits require prior reservation due to limited capacity. It is recommended to consult the detailed program on the official European Heritage Days website to plan your visit.
