A National Event in the Loire

Created in 1984 by the Ministry of Culture, the European Heritage Days is France's largest participatory cultural event. In the Loire department, this event takes on a special dimension thanks to the richness and diversity of local heritage: industrial architecture, castles of Forez, medieval religious buildings, national museums, and remarkable natural sites.

Each year, a national theme unites the activities offered throughout the territory. In 2025, the theme "Architectural Heritage" highlighted the built heritage of Saint-Étienne and the Loire, while the 2026 edition will focus on the theme "Heritage in Danger".

Saint-Étienne, City of Art and History

Labeled a City of Art and History, Saint-Étienne offers an exceptional heritage tour during these days. Visitors can discover:

  • The 41 Historical Monuments in the city center during guided tours or treasure hunts
  • The Municipal Archives, usually closed to the public, where archivists reveal the richness of the preserved documents tracing the history of the city and its metropolis
  • The Museum of Art and Industry, a unique testament to the city's arms, ribbon, and cycling past
  • The Mine Museum - Puits Couriot, a classified Historical Monument, which retraces the mining epic of Saint-Étienne
  • The MAMC+, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Saint-Étienne Métropole, one of the largest in France
  • The Cité du design, located on the site of the former Arms Factory, a symbol of the city's industrial reconversion

Activities for All Audiences

The Heritage Days in the Loire offer a varied program accessible to everyone:

  • Themed guided tours of the historic city center, discovering Art Deco architecture, covered passages, and inner courtyards
  • Storytelling tours for children (4-6 years old): through an epic tale, the youngest discover the medieval town of Saint-Étienne and meet the Furan river
  • Family treasure hunts (8-12 years old) to explore the city center's Historical Monuments in a fun way
  • Walks through the archives: a privileged moment of exchange with archivists on the history of Saint-Étienne
  • Exceptional openings of sites usually closed to the public: administrative buildings, artists' studios, places of worship

Beyond Saint-Étienne: the Entire Department Celebrates its Heritage

The Heritage Days extend throughout the Loire department. The castles of Forez, the Romanesque churches of Roannais, the characteristic villages of Pilat, and remarkable natural sites also open their doors. From Montbrison to Roanne, from Charlieu to Saint-Bonnet-le-Château, hundreds of sites participate in this unifying event.

Admission is free to the vast majority of sites, but some tours require prior reservation due to limited capacity. It is recommended to consult the detailed program on the official website of the European Heritage Days to plan your visit.

Heritage Days Loire — edition 2026
