Discover Saint-Étienne and Loire heritage over an exceptional weekend
Created in 1984 by the Ministry of Culture, the European Heritage Days constitute the largest participatory cultural event in France. In the Loire department, this event takes on a particular dimension thanks to the richness and diversity of the local heritage: industrial architecture, castles of Forez, medieval religious buildings, museums of national importance, and remarkable natural sites.
Each year, a national theme unifies the activities offered throughout the territory. In 2025, the theme “Architectural Heritage” highlighted the built wealth of Saint-Étienne and the Loire, while the 2026 edition is placed under the dual theme “Photography Heritage” — echoing the bicentenary of photography, which celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2026 — and “Heritage in Peril: Revive, Resist, Reimagine”, a theme adopted at the European level.
Awarded the “City of Art and History” label, Saint-Étienne offers an exceptional heritage journey during these days. Visitors can discover:
The Heritage Days in the Loire offer a varied program accessible to all:
The Heritage Days extend throughout the entire Loire department. The castles of Forez, the Romanesque churches of Roannais, the charming villages of Pilat, and remarkable natural sites also open their doors. From Montbrison to Roanne, from Charlieu to Saint-Bonnet-le-Château, hundreds of sites participate in this unifying event.
Admission is free at the vast majority of sites, but some visits require prior reservation due to limited capacity. It is recommended to consult the detailed program on the official European Heritage Days website to plan your visit.
The 43rd edition of the European Heritage Days will take place on September 18, 19 and 20, 2026 in Saint-Étienne and the Loire. Historic monuments, museums, archives, and remarkable sites will open their doors to the public free of charge for guided tours, activities, and exceptional discoveries.
Participating sites are spread throughout Saint-Étienne and the Loire department. The city center of Saint-Étienne is accessible by tram (lines T1, T2, T3) and bus from the Saint-Étienne Châteaucreux SNCF station.
