The largest Burgundy snail festival in Digoin
Every first weekend of August, Digoin hosts the largest Burgundy Snail Festival. For three days, Place de la République transforms into a huge open-air restaurant where over 1,600 dozen Burgundy snails are enjoyed. Dancing dinners, fireworks, a producers' market, and a funfair punctuate this gourmet and festive event that makes the entire Charolais-Brionnais region vibrate.
For over thirty years, the Fête de l'Escargot in Digoin has paid tribute to one of Burgundy's most emblematic dishes: the Burgundy snail (Hélix pomatia linnaeus). Organized by the Comité des Fêtes de la Place de la République, this event has become over the decades the largest Burgundy snail festival, a must-attend summer event in Saône-et-Loire.
The number is staggering: each edition sees over 1,600 dozen snails tasted, prepared according to the traditional Burgundian recipe with parsley butter. From Saturday evening to Monday evening, dinners and lunches follow one another under the marquees of Place de la République, in a friendly and gourmet atmosphere. The complete menu at €21 offers a starter, the famous snails, a meat dish, and a dessert, while enthusiasts can order additional dozens for €8 each.
The Fête de l'Escargot is not just about gastronomy. Dancing dinners with an orchestra punctuate every evening and lunchtime, from Saturday evening to Monday evening. Fireworks offered by the committee light up the nights of Saturday and Sunday. A funfair animates the square for the entire duration of the event, much to the delight of families.
On Monday morning, a market of local producers and artisans sets up from 8 am, complemented by a night market organized by the City of Digoin on Saturday evening. It's an opportunity to discover the riches of the Charolais-Brionnais terroir: cheeses, charcuterie, honey, jams, and other regional specialties. Exhibitions are also offered in the town hall.
After two years of interruption, the Fête de l'Escargot has returned in full force, driven by the attachment of an entire community to this gourmet tradition. The 34th edition in 2025 confirmed the popular enthusiasm for this festival that embodies the Burgundian art of living: conviviality, good food, and a festive spirit. A summer event not to be missed in the south-west of Saône-et-Loire.
