Gourmet picnic and hike at the summit of Mont Beuvray
Every year in September, the archaeological site of Bibracte, ancient capital of the Gallic people of the Aedui, hosts the Fantastic Picnic. This unique event combines hiking, local gastronomy, and music in the majestic setting of Mont Beuvray, labeled a Grand Site de France.
The day begins with guided hikes departing from the Bibracte museum:
Registration is mandatory at the Bibracte museum before the event date. Hikers are guided by companions who share their knowledge of the site's history, fauna, and flora.
From noon, hikers converge towards the summit of Mont Beuvray where a market of local producers awaits them. Visitors compose their picnic by strolling among the stalls:
The heart of the event is the giant picnic at the summit, where hikers and visitors settle on the grass to enjoy the products purchased from the producers. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, lulled by live music.
In partnership with Fleurs de Jazz, the Fantastic Picnic offers live concerts that accompany the picnic. Jazz, folk, and world music create a festive atmosphere at the summit of Mont Beuvray.
The event is also an opportunity to (re)discover the Bibracte museum, designed by architect Pierre-Louis Faloci. The museum traces the history of this Gallic city which was the capital of the Aedui and the place where Vercingetorix gathered the Gallic peoples before the Battle of Alesia.
The Fantastic Picnic returns to Bibracte on Sunday, September 13, 2026 at the summit of Mont Beuvray. On the program: guided gourmet hikes of 9 and 12 km, a local producers' market, a giant picnic at the summit, and musical entertainment in partnership with Fleurs de Jazz, all with free access.
For this 2026 edition, the Fantastic Picnic maintains its friendly formula combining hiking, Morvan gastronomy, and music, in the exceptional setting of Mont Beuvray, ancient Gallic capital of the Aedui, labeled Grand Site de France.
The day begins from 8:30 AM with a coffee reception in front of Le Chaudron restaurant, followed by the departure of the hikes at the Bibracte museum. Two routes accompanied by Bibracte guides are offered:
Both hikes include a gourmet break offered by producers around Beuvray. The hikes are free but limited in number: mandatory registration before September 7, 2026, at 03 85 86 52 40.
From noon, the local producers' market sets up at the summit of Beuvray. Everyone can compose their picnic by strolling among the stands of local Morvan products. Hikers converge towards the summit from 12:30 PM for the big friendly picnic on the grass. Remember to bring your own tableware.
The Fantastic Picnic is enlivened by a live music program at the summit, in partnership with the Fleurs de Jazz festival, which accompanies the picnic with a festive atmosphere.
