A festival born in 2023

The idea came from local resident Jean-Pierre Sauge and his friends, who felt that the fame of the Morteau sausage deserved a grand celebration. The first edition was held on September 2nd and 3rd, 2023, bringing together fourteen local associations and the town of Morteau. The town hall square was transformed into a gourmet village where each association ran a stall, serving their own sausage recipes, from rougail to burgers.

Two days in the town center

The entire town center is dedicated to leisure throughout the weekend. A stage set up in the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville hosts local and regional bands on both Saturday and Sunday. The street market and car boot sale spread throughout the streets of Morteau, reaching the establishments on Rue Pasteur on Saturday. For children, there are bouncy castles, a toy library, balloon modeling, face painting, and a treasure hunt starting from the École du Centre courtyard.

The Morteau sausage-eating contest remains the highlight of Saturday. Registration is handled at VDO, with eight participants plus the two previous winners.

Fifteen associations at the helm

The 2026 edition, chaired by Anthony Personeni, is powered by fifteen associations from the Val de Morteau: Rugby, Cycling, Football, Tennis, Basketball, Badminton, Haut-Doubs Bikers, La Lyre Mortuacienne, the Festival Committee, Handball, VDO, A2M, Label Rouge, Saint Michel, and the Lions Club. They meet monthly to prepare the program. The festival highlights local cured meat producers and Morteau sausage makers.

The Morteau sausage

The Morteau sausage has held Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status since 2010 and also carries the Label Rouge. It is smoked over coniferous wood in 'tuyés'—the large, pyramid-shaped wooden chimneys found in traditional Comtois farmhouses—which gives it its distinctive aroma and flavor.
