Festival d'Automne à Paris: A benchmark for contemporary creation since 1972

Established in 1972 by Michel Guy, who would go on to become Secretary of State for Culture, the Festival d'Automne à Paris has cemented its reputation as a premier event for international contemporary art. Every year, from September to December, it rolls out an ambitious and rigorous programme across some sixty partner venues—including theatres, museums, concert halls, and art centres—scattered throughout Paris and the Île-de-France region. Visual arts exhibitions often continue well into January.

A multidisciplinary and nomadic festival

The unique character of the Festival d'Automne lies in its resolutely multidisciplinary approach. Theatre, dance, music, opera, visual arts, performance, and cinema intersect in a programme that defies genre boundaries. The festival is also nomadic: rather than having a home of its own, it takes up residence in the most prestigious cultural institutions in Paris and the surrounding region, from the Centre Pompidou and the Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe to Chaillot, the Théâtre de la Ville, La Villette, the CENTQUATRE-PARIS, the Ménagerie de verre, Nanterre-Amandiers, and the MC93 in Bobigny.

Exceptional artistic leadership

Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota, who took the helm in 2011, serves as General Director under the presidency of Axel Dumas. Since 2022, artistic direction has been shared between Francesca Corona, responsible for theatre, dance, and visual arts, and Clara Iannotta, responsible for music. Both continue to strengthen the festival's ties to the international scene and emerging artists, following in the footsteps of the visionary directors who transformed the Festival d'Automne into an essential pillar of European cultural life.

Over seventy events per season

Each edition features more than seventy performances and events, bringing together world-renowned artists and emerging creators from five continents and over thirty countries. Throughout its history, the festival has supported the careers of major figures such as Pina Bausch, Bob Wilson, Patrice Chéreau, Tadeusz Kantor, Peter Brook, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Romeo Castellucci, and Christoph Marthaler.

A global reach

Attracting 150,000 to 200,000 spectators each season, the Festival d'Automne à Paris serves as a premier observatory for global contemporary trends. It plays an active role in the international circulation of works and artists through co-productions with major cultural institutions worldwide, while also fostering accessibility initiatives focused on youth, social outreach, healthcare settings, and education.
