The major event for romantic cinema on the Côte Fleurie
The Cabourg Film Festival — Journées Romantiques is a film festival founded in 1986 by Gonzague Saint-Bris, dedicated to romanticism in all its forms. Every year in June, for five days, it offers a selection of feature and short films, open-air screenings on Cabourg beach, and the awarding of the famous Swann d'Or. The festival unfolds along the Côte Fleurie, between Cabourg, Houlgate, and Dives-sur-Mer, attracting filmmakers, actors, and cinephiles to the Proustian setting of the Norman seaside resort.
Founded in 1986 by the writer and journalist Gonzague Saint-Bris, the Cabourg Film Festival — Journées Romantiques has become, in nearly forty years, the unmissable event for romantic cinema in France. Its general delegate is now Suzel Pietri. Every year in June, the festival transforms the seaside resort of Cabourg, immortalized by Marcel Proust under the name "Balbec," into the capital of the seventh art.
The festival presents an official feature film competition and a selection of French-language short films with romanticism as their central theme. A panorama of preview films completes the program, featuring works from around the world exploring passions, budding loves, and the end of times, from romantic comedies to documentaries.
During the closing ceremony, the Swann d'Or committee, composed of journalists and film professionals, presents its awards: best romantic actress and best romantic actor, female and male revelations, best direction, and best romantic film of the past year. The Grand Prix du Jury rewards the best film in the official competition.
The festival extends across several towns on the Côte Fleurie, between Cabourg, Houlgate, and Dives-sur-Mer, and offers open-air screenings on Cabourg beach at dusk, providing a unique cinematic experience facing the sea. Screenings also take place in local cinemas and at the Grand Hôtel de Cabourg.
The 40th edition of the Cabourg Film Festival — Journées Romantiques is expected in June 2026 in Cabourg. This will be an anniversary edition marking forty years of romantic cinema on the Côte Fleurie.
