A festive and committed weekend to imagine a sustainable and desirable future
Organized by the association Les Ami(e)s des Sheds in Kingersheim, the Festival de l'Avenir is a festive, curious, and committed weekend dedicated to low-tech solutions, knowledge sharing, and ecological transition. For three days, between concerts, practical workshops, solar cooker demonstrations, permaculture, and screenings, young and old explore concrete alternatives to collectively build a desirable future in the heart of the educational park-garden of Les Sheds.
The Festival de l'Avenir was born from the conviction that another future is possible, provided we build it collectively. Supported by the association Les Ami(e)s des Sheds, this festival takes place every late August in and around the Sheds of Kingersheim, an emblematic site in the Mulhouse area that combines shared workshops, educational gardens, and citizen meeting spaces. The event invites visitors to explore low-tech solutions — those useful, accessible, and sustainable technologies — while sharing moments of conviviality, music, and creativity.
The festival spans a full weekend in late August, with a varied program accessible to all ages:
Friday evening kicks off the festivities with a convivial evening combining live concerts (gypsy jazz, swing), a bar, and light catering, all accompanied by an exhibition on low-tech. On Saturday afternoon and evening, it's time for workshops and demonstrations: solar cookers, hay box cookers, bike repair workshops, FabLab, cooperative games, and family activities, followed by a film screening on ecological alternatives. On Sunday, the educational park-garden takes over with workshops on composting, permaculture, and self-watering with ollas, meetings with the garden's chickens, nature games, and a closing aperitif-concert.
At the heart of the Festival de l'Avenir is the low-tech philosophy: simple, repairable, accessible, and environmentally friendly technologies. The workshops offered do more than raise awareness: they transmit concrete know-how that anyone can replicate at home. Building a solar cooker, setting up a self-watering system, repairing your bike, understanding the principles of permaculture — these are all practical skills that help reduce one's ecological footprint on a daily basis.
The Sheds of Kingersheim, located at 2a rue d'Illzach, are more than just a venue: they are a shared living space where gardeners, DIY enthusiasts, artists, and committed citizens meet. The educational park-garden, with its permaculture plots, chickens, and experimental installations, embodies a concrete and joyful approach to the ecological transition. The Festival de l'Avenir is the annual highlight of this collective dynamic, open to all and designed to create connections between the residents of the neighborhood, the city, and the entire metropolitan area.
Accessibility is at the heart of the project: admission is free on Saturday and Sunday (Friday evening is ticketed), and participation in workshops operates on a pay-what-you-can basis. The festival is designed to welcome families with children, with activities suitable for all ages and a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. It's a gathering where people come to learn, share, have fun, and dream of a different future.
