About Festival de la Saint-Louis

The Saint-Louis Festival is a grand medieval festival held every summer in Aigues-Mortes (Gard, Occitanie), in the heart of the fortified city founded by King Louis IX. Entertainment, historical parades, chivalry tournaments, a medieval market, banquets, fire shows, and a medieval ball punctuate this weekend, transporting visitors back to the 13th century.

Since 2024, the festival has been organized by the Saint-Louis Events association, chaired by Julien Tranier, which perpetuates a tradition born nearly 38 years ago in Aigues-Mortes.

The Saint-Louis Festival in Aigues-Mortes

Each year, the medieval city of Aigues-Mortes, founded in the 13th century by King Louis IX, plunges back into its past for a weekend. The Saint-Louis Festival is one of the oldest and most renowned medieval events in the south of France, celebrating the crusader king and the rich history of the city.

An event organized by the Saint-Louis Events association

Since 2024, the organization has been handled by the Saint-Louis Events association, in close collaboration with the Aigues-Mortes town hall. This association, chaired by Julien Tranier, brings together history enthusiasts and volunteers who have taken up the torch of an adventure that began nearly 38 years ago.

In the heart of the fortified city

The festival unfolds throughout the entire intramural area of Aigues-Mortes: Place Saint-Louis, cobbled streets, rampart surroundings, Logis du gouverneur. The natural setting offered by the medieval ramparts, among the best preserved in Europe, contributes to the unique atmosphere of the event.

Entertainment and program

The program annually features historical parades, chivalry tournaments, a large medieval market with period artisans and merchants, knight encampments, a tavern (Taverne de la Reine Blanche), musical shows, falconry, fire shows, combat and war machine demonstrations, as well as a medieval ball. A medieval banquet is also organized each year in the courtyard of the Logis du gouverneur.

A festival for all audiences

Families, history buffs, medieval reenactment enthusiasts, or simply curious visitors: the Saint-Louis Festival attracts a very wide audience. It is possible to rent a period costume to become, for a day, an inhabitant of the royal court.
