Street arts and live performances in the bastides of western Aveyron
The Festival en Bastides is a traveling street arts festival that takes over the squares, alleys, and gardens of six bastides in western Aveyron each summer: Villefranche-de-Rouergue, Najac, Villeneuve d'Aveyron, La Bastide l'Évêque, Rieupeyroux, and Sauveterre-de-Rouergue. Created in 2001 and organized by the Espaces Culturels Villefranchois, it hosts around thirty companies for over 35 free performances in August, blending circus, theater, dance, music, puppetry, juggling, and clown arts.
Created in 2001, the Festival en Bastides was born from the desire to bring street arts to life in the medieval towns of western Aveyron. Each summer, for six days at the beginning of August, it takes over six bastides — these new towns founded in the 13th and 14th centuries — to offer quality performances in exceptional architectural settings.
The arcaded squares, paved alleys, shaded gardens, and centuries-old market halls of Villefranche-de-Rouergue, Najac, Villeneuve d'Aveyron, La Bastide l'Évêque, Rieupeyroux, and Sauveterre-de-Rouergue become open-air stages for the artists.
Each year, the Festival en Bastides features around thirty companies from regional, national, and European levels for over 35 performances:
The program favors demanding and popular artistic proposals, accessible to all audiences, in a spirit of conviviality and sharing.
True to its commitment to accessibility, the Festival en Bastides is entirely free. It is organized by the Espaces Culturels Villefranchois (formerly ATP Villefranche), an association that works year-round to promote live performance in rural areas. Each edition is a moment of popular celebration that brings together families, residents, and visitors around street arts.
The six bastides of the festival represent a remarkable architectural heritage. Villefranche-de-Rouergue, a royal bastide founded in 1252, boasts the largest arcaded square in southern France. Najac, dominated by its royal fortress, is classified among the Most Beautiful Villages in France. Sauveterre-de-Rouergue, another Most Beautiful Village, retains its intact covered market square. These preserved medieval sites offer an exceptional natural setting for outdoor performances.
