Free concerts in the heart of the Episcopal City of Albi
Every summer, the City of Albi takes over its most beautiful squares to offer residents and visitors over 40 free open-air concerts. From July 15 to August 16, jazz, blues, gospel, classical, and world music resonate at the foot of the Sainte-Cécile Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. A popular summer event, open to all, that transforms the city of Albi into an open-air music stage.
For several years, the City of Albi has chosen culture accessible to all by offering, throughout the summer, a series of free open-air concerts spread across the emblematic squares of the historic center. Place(s) aux Artistes has become the unmissable event for summer visitors and residents of the Grand Albigeois, with over 40 concerts scheduled from mid-July to mid-August.
The festival draws its strength from its unique architectural setting: the Sainte-Cécile Cathedral of Albi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the alleys of the old medieval quarter offer a sumptuous backdrop for concerts at dusk. Each evening, the squares host various musical ensembles, in a festive and relaxed atmosphere where families, tourists, and music lovers gather.
The program covers a wide spectrum of musical styles: jazz in all its forms (gypsy jazz, soul jazz, big band), acoustic and electric blues, deep and captivating gospel, classical music for string quartets and chamber ensembles, and world music that takes the audience on a journey across the five continents. Each evening is an opportunity to discover local, regional, and national artists, offering a great showcase for Occitan musical creation.
Beyond the musical performance, Place(s) aux Artistes is above all a social event. The complete freeness allows all audiences, regardless of their means, to share moments of conviviality around live music. Concerts are held in the evening, generally starting at 8:30 PM or 9:00 PM, in a relaxed atmosphere where it's pleasant to sit on a terrace, drink in hand, to enjoy the music and the mild summer nights of Albi.
The City of Albi strives to vary the venues and artistic offerings from one evening to another: some concerts take place in the inner courtyards of heritage buildings, others on more open squares capable of accommodating several hundred spectators. This diversity of spaces contributes to the unique atmosphere of the festival, where each concert offers a different scenographic experience.
Albi, the birthplace of the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and a jewel of the Southwest, is no stranger to a certain idea of celebration and creativity. Place(s) aux Artistes is part of this tradition of a cultural and festive city. It complements an already rich summer in Albi with numerous events, including the famous Festival Pause Guitare in July.
The complete program is announced each spring by the City of Albi and posted online on the albi-tourisme.fr website. Admission is free for all concerts, with no reservation required. It is advisable to arrive a little early for the most popular evenings, especially those featuring large orchestral formats or renowned artists.
