The Grape Harvests of Crime Fiction: Crime fiction in celebration in a Tarn bastide

Born in 2015 on the initiative of a handful of noir literature enthusiasts, the Lisle Noir Festival — Les Vendanges du Polar quickly established itself as one of the most endearing literary events in the south of France. Every third weekend in September, the charming medieval bastide of Lisle-sur-Tarn, nestled in the heart of the Gaillac vineyards in the Tarn region, hosts the elite of French and international crime and noir fiction.

In ten editions, the festival has invited over 310 authors from France and around the world, attracting up to 9,000 visitors during the ninth edition in 2024. Its profound originality lies in its assumed dual identity: that of a demanding literary festival, open to the great names of the genre, and that of a popular and friendly celebration, rooted in the wine-growing traditions of the Gaillac region. Because here, one tastes Gaillac wines while discussing murders, conspiracies, and intrigues — that's the whole essence of Les Vendanges du Polar.

A rich and diverse program

Over two intense days, the festival offers a dense program combining book signing sessions, thematic round tables, literary cafés, and public encounters. The invited authors readily engage in discussion and exchange, in a relaxed atmosphere that has earned the festival its reputation. No protocol here, no barriers: readers can approach their favorite authors, chat with them, and leave with signed books.

Each edition is placed under the patronage of an invited country or a strong theme, allowing for the discovery of different literary voices. Spain was honored during the 4th edition (2018) with authors like Víctor Del Árbol, winner of the European Crime Fiction Award. Great Britain was celebrated during the 7th edition (2022), notably featuring Fiona Mozley, Alan Parks, and Stuart Turton. Switzerland shone during the 8th edition (2023) with Nicolas Feuz. Each edition is sponsored by a big name in the genre: Daniel Pennac (2017), Michel Bussi (2022), or Anne-Marie Métailié (2019).

The 10th edition, in September 2025, celebrated a decade of existence with great fanfare, featuring an international program and around thirty authors from France, Spain, Belgium, and Switzerland. Among the authors present in various editions are Jean-Luc Bizien, Cédric Sire, Mireille Calmel, Éric Fouassier, Olivier Norek, Bernard Minier, Barbara Abel, and Morgan Audic.

Gaillac Wines and Noir Literature: An Unexpected and Successful Marriage

One of the festival's singularities is this alchemy between noir fiction and Gaillac wines, one of the oldest vineyards in France. Local wine tastings are integrated into the program, allowing festival-goers to discover typically Gaillac grape varieties — Duras, Braucol, Mauzac, Len de l'El — while discussing literature. This fusion of book culture and wine culture gives the festival its unique identity, at the crossroads of the Occitan terroir and the crime fiction imagination.

A Free, Popular, and Family-Friendly Festival

Supported by the association Lisle Noir, the festival has made the deliberate choice of free admission so that everyone can access literature without financial constraints. This open philosophy is reflected in the welcome extended to families, schoolchildren (from primary to high school), and all lovers of crime fiction, beginners and connoisseurs alike. Specific activities for young audiences are offered, making Lisle Noir a truly family-friendly festival.

The bastide of Lisle-sur-Tarn, with its characteristic arcades and covered walkways, offers an ideal setting for this event. The medieval streets, the Place Paul-Saissac, and the vaulted cellars are transformed for a weekend into places of culture and conviviality, hosting booksellers' stands, reading areas, and open-air debate stages.

Growing Influence

In a decade, the Lisle Noir Festival has built a solid reputation in the French literary festival landscape. Its strong territorial roots, its privileged relationship with the players of the Gaillac vineyards, and its loyal community of readers make it a model of local festival. The constantly increasing attendance — from a few hundred visitors in the early editions to over 9,000 in 2024 — testifies to the public's deep attachment to this event, which celebrates, year after year, the combined pleasures of reading, debate, and good food.
