The Medieval Festival of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte: the castle comes alive

Every August 14th and 15th, the medieval castle of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte comes alive with the animation of its great hours. Organized by the association Vikings et Vicomtes, the Medieval Festival takes over the castle grounds, the old moats, and the hospice meadow for two days of historical reenactment, live shows, and festivities for the whole family.

A castle steeped in history

The castle of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte is one of the most important fortresses in the Cotentin. Built in the 11th century, it played a strategic role during the Hundred Years' War and was the fief of the powerful Néel family, viscounts of Cotentin. Its imposing towers, ramparts, and moats provide a truly exceptional setting for a medieval festival, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the authentic atmosphere of Norman Middle Ages.

Encampments, battles, and shows

The festival program includes medieval and Viking encampments with sword and shield combat demonstrations, falconry demonstrations, bear trainers, medieval music groups, jugglers, and acrobats. Historical reenactment troupes present daily life in the Middle Ages: weaponry, cooking, crafts, costumes, and customs of the era.

Medieval market and tavern

A market of artisans and local products allows visitors to discover creations by artisans working in the old ways: leather, wrought iron, pottery, illumination, medieval jewelry. A medieval tavern, a rotisserie, and refreshment stands offer food and drinks throughout the two days of festivities. The open-air mass on August 15th, traditional games, and costumed parades complete a rich and varied program, accessible free of charge to all.
